Non - Brexit

Well it seems the DUP back the latest backstop proposal, which is one step closer than T.May got with her version.
Leo Varadker doesn't seem so sure, though.

Extraordinary isn't it? If it wasn't for the British Government allowing her family freedom of movement in the late 1960's, Priti Patel would have been born in a Ugandan backstreet gutter under the leadership of Idi Amin! .

It really is a party full of Nazi ideology.

I know right !!! It’s almost as if we as a country knew it was the right thing to do ,without even being in the EU , amazing .It was a Conservative government as well ,who would have thought it .

Which they wouldn't do under the points system? Who'd have thought it.

Will Johnson have enough votes to get it through Parliament?
Corbyn has come out against it, calling it worse than May's deal, without going into much detail as to why he thinks that.
Sturgeon predictably against anything that takes Scotland out of the EU.
Assuming that means most if not all of Labour will vote against it, plus all the Lib Dems and SNP = it'll need total Tory + DUP support to pass. Unless there's suddenly some cross party willingness for a deal, it's hard to see.
I think that's about as close to an answer as I can give! :)

Jon Craig

Parliament is to be prorogued on Tues 8 October & Queen’s Speech will go ahead on Mon 14 Oct, senior Westminster source has confirmed to Sky News. That means Boris Johnson will avoid PMQs on Wed 9 Oct.

Have they given the dissenting Conservatives the whip back or are they still suspended? Not sure what they do if it gets voted down. Leave with no deal then hope if it goes to court they win?

LOL - Wikipedia Priti Patel "Born London Borough of Islington". :)

The Asians expelled by Idi Amin were British citizens. So were many of those he murdered.

The British government didn't 'allow freedom her family freedom of movement' at all, the British government took in their own people.

Wiki

Priti Patel was born on 29 March 1972 to Sushil and Anjana Patel, in the London Borough of Islington,[7] while her parents were resident in Harrow.[8]Her paternal grandparents were born in Tarapur, Gujarat, before emigrating to Uganda, and establishing a shop in Kampala.[9] In the 1960s her parents emigrated to the UK and settled in Hertfordshire, several years before President Idi Amin came to power and expelled Ugandan Asians in November 1972.[10] They established a chain of newsagents in London and the South East of England.[11][12][13]

Patel attended Watford Grammar School for Girls,[14] a non-selective comprehensive at the time[a] despite its name,[15][16][17] before studying Economics at Keele University, and then pursuing postgraduate studies in British Government and Politics at the University of Essex.[18][19]

Priti Patel attacking "north London metropolitan liberal elites" in her speech. Surely a classic anti Semitic trope - if Corbyn had said that.

When I lived in North London it was awash with metropolitan liberal elites.

They were white, black, Asian, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, etc... oh, and Tony and Cherie Blair... the pinnacle of "north London metropolitan liberal elites"

This way of life has made such an impression, for several years Private Eye has run the 'It's Grim Up North London" cartoon strip.

Based on more recent visits and still having friends there I don't believe much has changed.

Priti Patel is a nasty bit of work but that line wasn't an anti-semetic trope.

Well, hopefully this will lead to something.

Full European Commission statement following Juncker-Johnson phone call

"President Jean-Claude Juncker spoke to Prime Minister Johnson on the phone this afternoon.

"The Prime Minister informed the president about the contents of the UK's latest proposal - which includes a legal text, explanatory note and letter from Prime Minister Johnson.

"President Juncker welcomed Prime Minister Johnson's determination to advance the talks ahead of the October European Council and make progress towards a deal.

"He acknowledged the positive advances, notably with regards to the full regulatory alignment for all goods and the control of goods entering Northern Ireland from Great Britain.

"However, the President also noted that there are still some problematic points that will need further work in the coming days, notably with regards to the governance of the backstop.

"The delicate balance struck by the Good Friday Agreement must be preserved. Another concern that needs to be addressed are the substantive customs rules.

"He also stressed that we must have a legally operational solution that meets all the objectives of the backstop: preventing a hard border, preserving North-South cooperation and the all-island economy, and protecting the EU's Single Market and Ireland's place in it.

"President Juncker confirmed to Prime Minister Johnson that the Commission will now examine the legal text objectively, and in light of our well-known criteria.

"The EU wants a deal. We remain united and ready to work 24/7 to make this happen - as we have been for over three years now."

That it is an anti Semitic trope is surely a matter of fact. It's been pointed out by a number of Jewish people including Robert Peston, David Baddiel, etc. and has been extensively written about in the past. That's not to say she meant it - she got sacked for her ties to Israel if I recall so unlikely that she's an anti Semite - still a careless use of language in a pre-prepared speech. One which, as I say, any Labour politician would have been slaughtered over irrespective of their intention.

Her parents left before Amin took over in 71.
