Match Report and MoM v Wolves

Si

Since we've been in this league we've played... 451 ...343....352....541...and of course 4411....what makes you so sure we won't try 433?.....it isn't a million miles away from 451 anyway.... it's certainly nothing new.
When you look at it contrary to popular belief Eddie's been quite flexible with our formation.

He has... but we haven’t played anything correctly in my opinion other than 4-4-2 that’s the problem and why we end up back at it.

4-5-1 and we never gamble midfielders beyond the forward so we don’t score enough.

3-4-3 and we don’t leave the full backs up the pitch. So it becomes 5-2-3 and we get overran.

I don’t think we have the knowledge to play anything other than 4-4-2 but hope I’m wrong!

That's only your opinion which your entitled to but we can all remember games where we've played fantastically well with all those formations but as we saw on Saturday this is a very difficult league to experiment with different systems especially for prolonged periods....we're only ever a handful of results away from being in trouble....which is why we revert back to the safety of 4411.....it's an extremely difficult problem that Eddie has to find the answer to.....no new formation is going to work straight away.

They do look quite rigid to be fair in 442. I know they adapt at times and he has played many different formations but at the moment their default position is always a rigid 442, for most of this season at least.

I dont suppose Eddie was too pleased with himself on his Sunday off...he buggered it up on Saturday...his body language told us that....but could any Cherries fan honestly, really, be that bomb happy if he suddenly slid off for big bucks to Real Madrid, Crewe Alexandra, Arsenal or Cove Rangers.....or they sacked him and he skulks off to friggin Plymouth Argyle...
...Come on....weeks ago we beat effin Saints, high- minded Everton and Big Little Manchester...and he was Surfin the Accolades......
...Mighty Wolves deservedly done us up like Pigs Trotters with Red Cabbages on the day ..lets not insult Their performance by damning our manager...
…... so here we are ...winning runs...losing runs...it was always going to be that way after steaming into the top league with pace and ease....Eddie is only now emerging from the first third or so of what could be the longest ever career in the top tier!
Mixing it with the best....the challenges wont go away...and Klopp might not fare any better given our resources....
...all of this experience is of High Interest Value as well as Emotion.....and makes us the most Knowledgeable of all fans...just ahead of Accringtonians and miles in front of Mancunians or Scousers!!!
None of them could win an argument with RT or Neil !!! ( or SDD...christ no!)

1 win in 7 vs mediocre sides is not good,
The only way to get results is to play a settled team.
Eddie keeps getting brain waves and keeps changing things.
Everybody can see Fraser has lost his mojo. where as Arni wants to play.
He should be on from the start. Billing in my view just struts around and adds nothing to the team. We saw the difference again when Lerma came on, he runs for everything and never gives up, which vibrates through the team.
I believe Eddie is thinking too much about what the other team might do, thus changing things week after week. I bet everyone thought wtf when they saw the team sheet Saturday.
Play a settled side and stick to it. Injuries like we had to Josh and Dom on Saturday didn't help I know.

Not saying you're not allowed a view on the game, but for someone who doesn't watch the games, you spend an awful lot of time defending anybody in an afcb tracksuit and contradicting the studied opinion of people that were there.

Due to the joys of TV and the internet, I see most games, either the full thing or enough to form a view. Just like lots of other AFCB fans who post here. You are obviously not seeing the comments I make questioning things, so really not quite sure what your problem is. The actual specific thing I called Neil out for [ while otherwise agreeing with many of the points he made ], was not something I had to see the game for anyway. And it was something others also call him out for.

Just some Player Ratings upon further reflection...

Ramsdale 7 - Made plenty of excellent saves and can't be faulted for any of the goals. Becoming a frontrunner for player of the year so far.

Smith 6 - I thought he had an okay game, his offensive ability wasn't helped by the formation. One of the more consistent outfield players on the day.

Francis 2 - Just taking a step back and looking at the game neutrally, he didn't really do anything right. Constantly out of position in some pseudo RB role, always chasing shadows, poor in possession, essentially responsible for the opening goal, brain dead sending off. I don't want to dogpile on him but he IS probably the reason we ended up losing that game. The worrying thing is that I think he should've come off at halftime for a change in shape, and I don't believe EH would've done it.

S. Cook 7 - Individually thought he had a decent game in defence; once Francis went off he rallied he team and led by example. Well taken goal.

Ake 6 - Was okay, not a great game by his high standards and part of a mostly muddled defence. Could have equalised in the second half with a cooler head.

Rico 6 - Perhaps largely at fault for the second goal (someone on the left seemed to lose their man), but other than that I thought he was pretty good. Has become a really good one-on-one defender, and passing has improved a lot.

Fraser 4 - frAsEr.exe has stopped working.

Billing 4 - His worst performance for us so far, and probably his only bad one so far as well. Poor in possession and slow to react to and pin down dangerous moves. Tbf, he had no options to pass to when he did get the ball.

L. Cook 5 - Poor first half similar to Billing, but improved notably after the break with Lerma alongside him. Had a lot more bite and aggression in the second half, though I thought it was strange that he came off for Gosling.

H. Wilson 4 - Completely and utterly anonymous. Still not a winger; compare his performance to Traore's and he seems comically lightweight.

C. Wilson 6 - Had absolutely no support in the first half and barely got a sniff. I've been critical of his lack of movement and ability to create chances for himself, but his support was truly awful this game. Was very good second half other than some poor passes. Excellent hold up play.

Subs:
Lerma 8 (MOM) - It's a bit worrying how useless we seem to be without him. Came on and almost singlehandedly dragged us to a more prideful result with endeavor, direct passing and tackling. Was Kante-esque and more than made up for the missing man.

Danjuma 7 - really lively performance that, along with Lerma's introduction, made us seem not quite as sh1t. A few ball-hoggy moments but gave us a spark of creativity that was sorely missing.

Gosling 6 - Not bad at all. Looked a bit rusty but I don't think he made any mistakes, broke the ball up nicely. Probably rushed into it earlier than we'd have liked with Solanke's injury.

On reflection the second half was really impressive (whether that was down to an inspired team talk, a forced change in shape, Wolves shifting down a gear or all three). First half was inexcusable and was probably the biggest misstep by the manager I've seen in a very long time. Wolves were good, but we made them look even better than they were, and with the right set up, personnel and tactics in the first half I believe we would have won that game.

To summarise:
- Playing what amounted to 5 at the back, at home, against a team that was only one place above us was an awful decision.
- Throwing Francis in for his first start in nearly 11 months, in a big formation change, was an awful decision (I would have had Francis in a back 3 before the game; just not for THIS game).
- The referee was appalling and consistently failed to punish Wolves for cynical fouls while we got the book thrown at us. The free kick for the first goal was also taken about 5 yards further away from the goal line than it should have been.
- Lerma is a fantastic player and should have started the game.
- Wilson is not being supported nearly enough by his fellow attackers (Fraser and Harry), especially as he's not the sort of player that can fashion chances for himself. H. Wilson needs to play centrally or not at all, and Fraser needs a spell out of the team.
- Danjuma looks like an effective Ibe and should now be starting for us.
- Not convinced that Billing/Cook as a partnership works, and I don't know why this is exactly? I think Lerma brings out the best in billing in a way that Cook doesn't.

I go along with those marks. Is Billing now suspended for the Spurs game. I think he has reached five bookings.

It was harry wilson who lost the man for the 2nd goal btw

I don't get why Lerma didn't start ..... as you state first class flying should not leave a muscular midfielder needing more than a day to recover.

Regrettably Eddie again made wrong decisions by picking "friends". We used to suffer this too often with Sideways Surman. Whilst I like Franno a lot as a bloke he is looking like a Cup Player or replacement for Cook / Ake if they suffer injuries. We all know he lacks pace and lets face it few players regain their original speed following an ACL injury .... speed that he didn't have anyway. Also factor in that he's almost another year older following his recovery.
I still remember Wifred leaving him for dead down the wing .... that must have been 4 years ago now.
Both yellow cards were because he was either slow to react of beaten for pace.

I'm also baffled why Eddie either didn't change a formation that clearly wasn't working sooner or why substitutions were left until half time. Most other games little happens til 80th minute.

Danjuma looks a shining light in a dire performance. He seems to be the only player in midfield that doesn't want to knock it square or look for an option to pass backwards. He also seems so comfortable and assured on the ball. Surely has to start the next game.

I did manage to speak to Franno yesterday and he has no complaints over the two yellows but more worryingly said Brookes is some way off. Weren't we originally told October? New Year looking more likely.

Someone else suggested similar earlier, but after Wolves' first goal I was yelling (at my computer monitor) for Eddie to take off Francis and Billing (aka, Booking).
It was crystal clear at that point that the plan was not working at all, and it seemed inevitable that they would score again if we didn't change something drastically.
And then 10 minutes later, they did score of course.
For what it's worth, I would have brought on Jack Stacey for Francis, switched to a back 4, and brought on Lerma for Billing. I guess Smith would have moved into a midfield 3 with Cook and Lerma.

I have seen Adam Smith play on both flanks as a full back, wing back and winger. Never seen him as a central midfielder before.
