England Euro 2020

Agree about the Italian anthem. Jaunty tune, a quiet bit, a key change and a rousing finish. Ours is a dreadful dirge in comparison.

Just to appease the jingoists that won't allow any criticism of anything, I'll claim the Italian anthem is about constantly combing your hair and remembering to phone you mother twice a day.

Is that ok now I've added some stereotyping for balance?:wahey:

Nothing about Pasta or Pizza?

Not at all Brian. Just saying that it’s a good topic for a debate. Personally I like a good anthem. Unfortunately I think ours is a bit of a dirge and it’s deference to the Queen/King is a bit cringeworthy. I know as ex service you’ll disagree but that’s good isn’t it ? As for good ones, the Welsh, Italian, Russian and Australian are top of my list.

Oh I agree about the deference to King /Queen bring cringeworthy...and too dreary for me. ! If we have to keep it- then just for Britain( change it when Elizabeth departs?) and for England to have its own separate one..maybe Jerusalem but having said that...we have enough iconic songwriters/composers to have something entirely new and appropriate!

The Welsh one is superb, the best I'd say...Italy's is brilliant...Aussie's - great words...and not sure if I should but I actually like the Scot's anthem and that of ROI.

For certain its an interesting multi- angled debate !

Surely an anthem has to be something everyone might want to join in with.

GSTQ as others have said is a bit of a dirge but the national one.

Not this time but in the past, a number of players of the England team team mouths remained closed.

So this has to be considered for the England anthem after the other night and how people/players etc enjoyed it and joined in.

Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, a song written for his wife more than 50 years ago and inspired by the daughter of a former US president, has become the unofficial anthem of the England team at Euro 2020. And it's not the only pop song to have been adopted by England fans.

"I've never seen anything like it!" cried former England footballer Micah Richards on BBC Radio 5 Live on Wednesday.

Over on ITV, another former England player-turned-pundit, Gary Neville, soaked up the joyful atmosphere in Wembley Stadium and declared: "This is one of the best experiences I think I've had in football."

They weren't speaking after England's men qualified for their first major final since 1966.

They were talking before the semi-final, when 60,000 people were belting out Sweet Caroline as the teams prepared to take to the pitch.

A couple of hours later, the song blasted out of the speakers again, and this time the whole squad linked arms and jumped up and down as they joined in the euphoric chorus.

Are any of the people belting out Caroline...even thinking of any connection to England...admittedly it could be classified as 'catchy'....but really...chav/trendy has taken over ...and once again a very American influence...not too good innit !

If we lose on Sunday..will it peter out, be seen as a jinx ? ..who knows....'funny old game' is my default!

It's game over for the royals when the queen dies. Even the royalists I know don't like the idea of singing about God saving King Charles. She's at least worthy of respect as an individual, Charles not so much.
If they had any sense they'd skip Charles for William and Kate, who would do a great job tomorrow if needed, and would be for the long term. But that's not quite how Monarchy is supposed to work I suppose.

Being an impartial statesman that represents all of us (yes even you) and fulfills a constitutional role outside of our overtly political bubble. Perhaps you'd rather Boris Johnson was the sole figurehead and holder of all executive power, but I doubt it, I certainly wouldn't.
I didn’t vote for her.

Those who mentioned Sweet Caroline will place 100 lines on my desk at the end of playtime! 'Sweet Caroline is an American pop song and not the English National Anthem'.
