Clock is ticking …

Jephcott might be an interesting signing.. although we'd be taking a punt in whether he would be effective at this level...the other 3 are the obvious choices Clarke Harris and Obafemi wouldn't be cheap and wouldn't be happy to play second fiddle to Solanke......Dembele is probably the most likely.
They’d be signed to compete, not to play second fiddle. That’s the point in a squad is it not?

I strongly suspect Obafemi will be the one on a permanent
I don't know.....it's a lot of money for an unproven player.... Blackburn were quoted 6m I think.......if we're not interested in Clarke Harris I don't see why we'd be willing to fork out that amount for Obafemi...
I still think Dembele is the more likely.

Are you suggesting Dom isn't good enough and won't give his all if someone does not come in good enough to compete?

Bearing in mind Dom's pedigree with England youth, and the fact that he has still needed a couple of seasons to develop to the player we are seeing now then it's hard to see that there are many that fit your recruitment ask, who won't cost £10m.

Someone who can cover if he is ill for example, and join him upfront off the bench in the closing stages / give him a rest when the game is done would make more sense but the calibre of that player is not a par to Solanke, and would underwhelm most on here.

I am just mystified where SP sees Saydee fitting in or not. He is ahead of Scrimshaw whose landed in L1 and already scored in L1. Saydee proves this by making the first team then scores and creates a goal in the cup. Yet despite being 3, then 4 goals down suggests SP can't see value in giving him more time Tuesday, so can't have any intention of playing him in the league from what I see.

Whatever happens next, I find that disappointing and it's difficult to understand who SP should get as I can't figure out what he is trying to achieve. Be glad when it's clearer this time next week.

Not at all. I’m suggesting that as good as Dom has been this season there will be moments when he is out of form and that place may become up for grabs, every squad needs players who are capable of stepping into the first team role. All of the players I listed would compete with Dom and would be available for well under 10m. There may also be moments where we want to play two strikers, depending on the opposition.

I'd be amazed if we didn't sign another recognised striker, otherwise letting surridge seems an odd decision.

I think it's just one of those typical transfer things, where it goes down to the last minute due to other clubs involved also trying to bring in replacements, bartering over fees etc

The last 3 mentioned are all a punt as they have 7 Championship games between them and therefore all 3 may not be effective at this level. Obafemi has 20 plus games at PL level

Pretty sure SP is finding this as frustrating as us. Is difficult because when players know they are likely to be back up, they are less likely to want to come. That limits you somewhat unless it's a striker who can also play in other positions.

Dom will definitely give this season his all as you say but there are so many uncontrollables: injury, illness or isolation so yes I agree that we need a back up. With hindsight, perhaps we should have got a player in before selling Surridge but with the financial pressure of the moment, I suspect there was a risk of losing out on the Surridge sale and having more strikers than needed.

Yeah, plus think it makes it a bit more difficult to bring in quality as we now only play 1 recognised striker.

We can't guarantee them a start or potentially many at all 'if' dom doesn't get injured or start playing poorly. So could be hard sell, unless they can also fit into other positions. After all, that was apparently the reason surridge left..

Unlikely we ll spend 5 million plus to bring in a striker who may barely play and pl
clubs unlikely to loan us someone decent!
