Lewis Cook

We could but Parker likes left-footed right wingers...

Parker loves an inverted winger, did it relentlessly at Fulham meaning wingers always cut inside & any delivery is going away from the strikers rather than coming onto them. Mitrovic is a different player under Silva & there's a reason why he & Parker fell out spectacularly.

Inverted winger delivery?

Why are you here exactly?

In peace & to give some insight having watched a team for over 2 years under Parker. No need to be prickly!

You've come to tell us that Parker plays boring football and that your current manager is better after we've got knocked out of the cup by a non-league side? Er.. thanks for the insight.

Strange one, so much ability/talent (at least at 1 point) , but looks too passive, doesn;t impose himself on games - shadow of what he was/can be. Hopefully something will click and he'll step up soon. Seems to be delivering 6 out of 10 or worse performances consistently since his return.

Otherwise, needs to be dropped, maybe for Cantwell, or just about any other cm in our squad?

This. I actually feel really sorry for Cook. It’s not his fault that he’s being asked to perform a role that he’s not capable of. Doesn’t make him a bad player, his skill set just lays elsewhere.
Yeah like lower Championship/ Division 1.
The guy only plays for 10 minute periods and has never bossed a midfield for 90 minutes since he's been here.

When was the last time he played really well anywhere in midfield? At some point you've got to accept that the player is just not very good.

he had a really good game at Chelsea a few years ago, playing on the right side of midfield, might have been the game gosling scored the winner via VAR?

other than that he's been utter shite
those injuries have done for him, sadly

Got to love the comments on here. Utter lack of understanding about what he does and how he does it. Even calling him utter shite.

I bet if I searched back the exact same posters would be saying the same about Surman. Some people just dont understand football.

Playing him as a winger would indicate our manager is one of them..

Cook is nowhere near Surman's level. Surman absolutely did dictate games start to finish and completely controlled the tempo with his metronomic passing. Did the simple things brilliantly and allowed the other players to go about winning games. Cook has never done this.

When cook is played in the deeper role he fills in the full backs when the go forward, hes always open to recieve the ball from defenders and hes always looking to get the ball forward.

I think you missing a big issue here...Surman had players like Ritchie, Daniels, Pugh and Francis bombing up the wings to lay off to. whenever Lewis lays it off its either lost or simply comes back. you think prime Surman would make this current formation and style of play tick?

Cook has never been as effective as Surman so it's not down to the current set up. He's isn't always open to receive the ball like Surman was he goes missing for large parts of games and always has done. Can you remember a game where he played in the middle and dominated the game? If he's ever done it it was a long long time ago.

I think that Lewis is one of the main victims of Parker trying to impose a rigid system on his players rather than trying to blend the natural abilities of the players he has to work with into a coherent way of playing as a team that maximises their individual talents. I've never been a big fan of Harry Redknapp, but that was one thing he was very good at. He could visualise in his mind the shape of a team and how various players could fit together most effectively.
I still have great faith in Lewis Cook's natural ability, which if used wisely could still benefit the team.

You didnt answer my question, do you think prime Surman would make the current formation and style of play tick?

The issue isnt Cook vs Surman. The issue is that we had 3 midfielders who do not attack players or go past them. Thats not Cooks game, it wasnt Surmans game. The team last night played exactly how Parker asked them to play. its how weve played all season. Its all left to right rather than forward. Hes set the team up and asked them to play like that. Look at Lowe. Is he a good player? Weve seen enough of him this season so see that hes a pretty good winger and can run at defences and cause problems. Is he a lone striker who gets very little service type of player? No.

Its not always about players playing badly. Its about how they are used. I wouldnt blame the players at all for last night, they were only doing what they were told. Its not surprising that that the players who came out of the game with some credibility were playing in their positions.
