Jefferson Lerma

Yeah, 5 years 'service' in this era is now mean feat. Actually feel a little sad about this one tbh, now its formalized Almost like an amicable breakup (without wanting to be too dramatic, I'll blame it on the 1 hour sleep I had last night) :D>

No hard feelings from either party. Go separate ways with level of respect.

Just seen the afcb lerma video - very emotional myself now!

Do we think he was always going to leave from the moment contracts weren’t being signed, or was he genuinely unsure of what he was going to do up until like a few weeks ago? I kind of get the vibe that he was always set on leaving especially when we were playing crap, but that our resurgence and early safety might’ve given him cause to think about it more.

In a way, by comparison, is what Zemura did really that much worse? Point blank honesty, I don’t want to sign another deal, I’m going to leave. By all accounts from what I’ve heard he was still happy to play if called upon unlike Fraser. But we took the stance of not wanting to play him which is fair. If the club knew Lerma was probably leaving, it’s a smidge hypocritical imo. He’s obviously a more important, more experienced player.
I'm guessing it comes down to dialogue between the parties. From scraps I've seen online (think it was Temple or McAdam but might be wrong) Jeff and his advisors etc. we're open with the club throughout whereas with Zemura they weren't. Sure I read that Zemyra agreeing terms elsewhere was a surprise to the club. I have no idea if that's true, wouldn't surprise me either way!

Very sad to see Lerma leaving, especially so given his destination. Certainly one of the best players we've had in the past few years. I wish him well and want him to be successful, but just not with Palace.

This has been done to death, no it isn’t the same. Zemura and his agents didn’t even communicate with the club, they discovered his move via social media! He did not treat the club with any respect.

Whilst I 100% get the frustration at Lerma going to a club that is not that far ahead of us in terms of ambitions etc. and ceiling perhaps, we do need to take on board that Palace are a bigger club than we are and are happier paying the bigger bucks... Frustratingly this it is a step up the ladder...

Average attendance at Selhurst is mid 20k
Signing on free will be big for Jeff
100% will be getting a bigger pay day than we have offered
Probably getting a longer contract than we have offered
This is Jeff's last decent contract opportunity so loyalty doesn't come into it

I wish Jeff the very best of luck for the future... Will be interesting when we meet next season... Will our team go at him like Gosling tried to get Watford to... I'd actually hope we have a bit more about us than that...

You could be right, and I'd agree from previous gens, but not so sure under Foley. Of course its still relatively early days on that front, but I'm positive about intentions to level us up.

We only have to look at Danjuma back in Jan. Widely reported we blew Everton out the water financially - from his agent no less - but he went there instead.

I guess we may have different rungs of players, in terms of we may have made/considered Danjuma a marquee player, so will to stretch budget for him and perhaps 1 or 2 others, that are on x amount more than the next tier of players at the club.

Also, Nico Jackson - rejected Saints as apparently we outbid/and or offered Jackson vastly more than Saints. Again, he may have been singled out as a 'star player', so board perhaps happy to stretch again.

Anyway the bloke on here the other day from Palace said Zaha is on 120k, next level down on nearly half that apparently. Is Lerma going to go in as their 2nd highest player??? Not sure he warrants that, but Palace may see it otherwise I guess.

Always a measure of a player when you see how fans treat them when they return.

Lerma wil get an Ake type welcome.

Wee Turd not so much.

Gutted to see him go.

When he does return with Palace I will be calling for him to shoot at every opportunity but will be ducking at the same time. I sit in row M.

Attitude/commitment in training, attitude with other players, available replacements, all of the above and more no doubt.

Very disappointed indeed to see Jeff leave - one of my all time favourite Boscombe players, and in my view second only to Nathan Ake as the best player we have ever had. Just loved the spirit he brought to the game.
Of course no one is irreplacable but it will be very difficult and expensive to find another player with his all round attributes and the qualities that he brought to the team. Finding someone like him in their prime who is super fit, tough and strong and very rarely injured is a pretty difficult ask.

You started down the bigger club explanation but quickly drifted into the money. Don’t blame him for doing that and securing his family’s future but expect he had a lot more “new challenge” opportunities that would be more interesting than palace. Only recently that athletic declared that our ownership model was a better bet than the palace set up !

Agree. Fitness is an important point too given all our new signings in January have had injury issues

Not in South America, 100s of them over there.

I am sure we did our very best to get him to sign a new contract because a similar replacement is not going to be cheap and Jeff was a known quantity, which is always preferable.

I don't think Jeff is particularly motivated by money. I tend to believe the "seeking a new challenge" statement.

He had been here a long time and sometimes you do need to just shake things up a bit to keep things fresh, to stay motivated.

No complaints from me. He owes us nothing and he should do what he feels he needs to do at this time. If he genuinely wants a change and a new challenge then there wasn't much the club could do to make him want to stay here.

Cheers Jeff, have a great career.
