Gary O'Neil

Looking at a lot of photos he reminds me a bit of Charlie Daniels !

maybe, although if he is as brilliant everyone thinks then likely to be approached by bigger clubs quickly eg Kompany after one championship season at Burnley
Kompany's contract with Burnley is until 2028 but that aside a short contract for the manager probably suits everyone in this situation. If he's a success he's free to leave for a bigger club or be offered a much better deal by us, if he fails it doesn't cost a lot to get shot of him. Hence GONs 18 month contract.

The PL is brutal and there's no room for sentimentality. I thought we would go down next season with GON as despite doing a great job to keep us up, we were at times abysmal, lacked a clearly defined style of play and were a shambles at set pieces all season.

I would have despaired if we'd gone for one of the manager merry-go-round favourites, but Iraola has a great reputation as a young exciting coach with an attacking style of football. No guarantees it will work out of course, but it's a proactive and ambitious move from the club.

Pundits won't get it because they do zero research on little old clubs like Bournemouth, think we should "know our place" (classic Richard Keys) and therefore believe GON must've been an irreplaceable miracle worker.

GON leaves with our heartfelt thanks, but striving for an even better option is what has made Bill successful and hopefully what shakes us out of our inferiority complex as a club.

surprised the manager only gets a 2 year deal when players signing up for 3-5 years.
I think it’s prudent from an investor point of view. Offer the shortest contract he’ll agree to just in case it doesn’t work out. Less compensation to be paid if it doesn’t work out and we can always offer an extension anytime if he is meeting expectations.
The fact that he agreed to come here when only a two year contract was being offered shows just how keen he must have been to come here IMO.
A great deal for us I reckon !

I think he’ll be more than happy to sign an extension if things are going well, so sensible to not commit any more money than we have to at the beginning.

The dogs abuse the club are getting across social media is something else.

Oh well it's never been a popularity contest.

You mean the guys who've given years of service to the club?
Yes I do. Big fan of O'Neil but these guys won't survive the cull..surely. New broom will sweep them away.
Question is...why has the new manager been given a two year contract only, if we have a future plan

There should always be a thread of the club's DNA running through the coaching team. That doesn't mean they all need that connection but there should be someone acting as a link

Have been taking a hiatus of sorts so was very taken aback when I saw the title of this thread. Not sure how I feel about this, my canadian sensitivities think he should have be given the chance to continue. But on the other hand, that fixtures list in August September would have likely been Gary's undoing.

As far as I can tell that may be Iraola's preference, heard he was using single year contracts at Rayo by choice. I guess it makes it easier for him to progress to new clubs when he impresses, so could be a sign of self-confidence. Seems an exciting, attack-minded manager, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he does here.

And since this is the GON thread and I'm a bit late to the news, thanks for everything Gary. It was a difficult situation he came in on, but despite tactical struggles as a first-time manager, he was excellent at motivating the team and that was enough. I hope his separation has been amicable and he gets a new manager position soon that he can keep developing in.

Somehow I doubt this is amicable from O'Neil's perspective. But, hopefully, when the shock wears off, he'll feel positive about the experience of being a manager and pleased about the money he's made, ready to move on to something new and exciting after a decent rest and lovely holiday somewhere. In a way, it's better for him to have left on a high. There will be a load of clubs queuing up for his services when the time's right for him.
