Lloyd Kelly

He hasn't left yet, so its actually 2.
Christ let's panic about a year's time, maybe Dom will leave for free at the end of his contract
You’re such a strange guy.

We’re discussing what should be done with Kelly, should we accept the bid or not (if there is a bid.) Of course the fact that he’s out of contract at the end of the season is relevant you plumb.

Kelly, the guy this thread is about.

How long he have is is irrelevant, what is relevant is the fact that he was allowed to run his contract down and leave for free. When a player leaves for free you have to spend a chunk of the budget replacing him, and the areas that you really need to strengthen become neglected.

just like billing did just before he signed that 4 year contract
do you actually forget the crap you wrote only a couple of weeks ago
You are totally missing the point, as you often do.

I didn’t once mention their abilities as players. The point is that they were allowed to leave for free, well run clubs do not allow their first team players to leave for free.

they do if they're average and/or ask for too much money
talk about totally missing the point

plenty of teams have first team players leave on a free it happens all the time even to top clubs

Always thought Mings was a better player. Hes fast for starters...

Touché :tophat:

Whatever his faults, what you can say about Kelly is that he’s never “hid” on the pitch. Even with the groans etc after the 8th misplaced pass, he’d always stick to the task and keep trying to be brave on the ball. For better or worse lol. I think that’s commendable.

Mings never seemed like he could bothered to actually work for his place in the team post injury. I’m 100% sure he faked a few of his less serious injuries to “escape”. Wolves away being a prime example. He’s had a great career since so fair play to him.

I thought Mings, around the time of the "stamp" at United, was destined to be a starter. He was playing and competing very well.Shame it never worked out.

You said we lost 3 first team regulars, when it's 2, who's the plumb?
Yes we dont want him to leave on a free, but as with billing, as you said was gone to West ham, that quote went well. We still have a year to get him signed.

But if they are asking to much money do you not sell them with a bit on there contract if someone is interested you take it in stead of getting nothing

My opinion is based purely on the fact he’s out of contract at the end of the season. Successful clubs are not build by continually allowing valuable assets to leave for free. If he won’t sign a new deal, which he won’t because he deserves better than the large moronic sections of our fan base who don’t recognise his obvious quality, then we should take the money and run. Reinvest it in another player on a long contract. Letting three first team regulars leave for free in the space of a year is criminal, and is exactly how NOT to run a sustainable top flight club. We’ve already suffered this season by having to invest circa £40m to replace our left back and centre mid, with no money coming in in return. And as a result we have had to neglect the area of the team that really needed addressing ie the attack. This cannot keep happening. Sign a new deal or sell are the only rational options.

What could they have done differently with Lerma? There was no way that either the player or club were going to extend his contract in the Championship and after that he only had a season left and had massive signing on fees dangled in front of him by his agent.

Who knows if we got any offers for lerma last year, but securing another season in the Premier league was maybe worth more

This is half a story. Well run clubs don't cave in to unrealistic wage demands that threaten their wage structure either. Zemura will have been offered a contract like Anthony was. One signed one didn't. Move on.

Spurs must see what very little others see in Kelly; I don't think the dude is premier league level quality but if they give us a decent fee for him, then alright. And yes Senesi is tons better, he just is:cool:
He’s our best central defender by a long way. Class player. However imho weakest distribution of them bar meps. He also covers left back so sell Kelly and we need a cb and lb with the clock ticking down. Keep imho

Pace is just one of many core physical attributes that can add to or detract from a players game. Senesi would be a better player if he was quicker, but him being slower doesn’t make him worse than Kelly overall. Pace can hide flaws, and a lack of pace can make players better in other areas to compensate.
I agree but you have to take into account the system the team want to play. If you want to press high you have to defend on the half way line else you get too stretched. Iraola has always played this way and is implementing it here. If you want to do that then we only have one quick centre back and he has to play. You can’t defend high up a pitch with slow centre backs. If you want to play deep and build from back slowly then Senesi could be a better option as he had bits that Kelly doesn’t have. We don’t though:

Absolutely no way we should sell unless we can line up a replacement LB option at the very least, and ideally CB too. We can't risk getting through to Jan with a teenager as our only viable option at LB. Please god nobody mention Smith as a LB option.

Assuming we can line up a LB and get a decent fee for Kelly then I can see the argument to cash in. However we aren't desperate and so should hold out for a big fee.

In an ideal world we wouldn’t be looking to cash in. We’re not overly blessed with options at centre back or left back.

An in form Lloyd Kelly, with an organiser next to him is one of the first names on the team sheet. For all those that boo him, there’s a reason why Spurs want him…

But with him entering his last year of his contract if he’s keen to leave we can’t just let him walk for free if there’s a decent offer on the table. Even if it would cost more to replace him.

Agree. Few of us on here, including KK, have suggested there's a very good player lurking in Kelly. He's very composed (when confidence isn't in shreds), which is probably why a very good/'elite' footballing side is showing interest now.

Board/management must be talking with him now to see how receptive he is to a new contract. But let's face it, if someone like spurs are making you an offer, coupled with the booing, groaning aimed in your direction (including your first game back after months out injured)...well, I for one can't say I'd be shocked to see him leave in the next few days.

We may not get that much for him, relatively speaking, but given his confidence, should just cash in rather than allow him to leave on a free.

We need a replacement through the door as well though. With James Hill leaving on loan this would suggest that the club are content unless anything dramatic happens today.

That Championship season with Cahill beside him, I thought he looked great.

And with Nat Phillips. He just needs the organiser next to him. I think having previously had the armband everyone expects him to take that role, but he’s always looked better with an organiser alongside him.

Definitely do. Plus another lb... which we arguably need, regardless whether Kelly stays or goes.
