Kevin Keegan

It's never good to see a thread appear with a random over 70s person's name as the title but thankfully not too bad this time.

When you read what he said it's a fair opinion. Can you really take pundits seriously if they weren't as good as the level of football they Re commenting on? Maybe, maybe not. Same applies to people like Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton.

About as seriously as I take the posters on here regarding Chris Sutton for sure!!

But seriously, I don't think being a good pundit requires you to have been a particularly good player, male or female and when you watch half the stuff they come out with, having been a top player certainly doesn't make someone a good pundit.

You wouldn't use former professionals at all if it wasn't relevant to the job. Their input carries more credibility because they have experience of playing the game at the level they are commenting on. Otherwise you might as well get some bloke from this forum to do it.

The BBC always pick really good players of their day and most of them are useless pundits. Sky tend to pick good pundits and most of them were useless players.

not necessarily, depends how you quantify credibility
this morning danny murphy predicted we'd be relegated
doubt he could name more than half a dozen players in our current squad

I suppose it depends what you're asking pundits to do. If they are commenting on the technical aspects of the game and what it is like playing at that level then you need people who have done that if you want credibility.

If you want score predictions you're better off asking a bookie for his opinion.

I reckon there would be a few who would volunteer!!

Also according to Keegan's criteria if the article is correct, neither Roy Hodgson nor Jose Mourinho would merit being listened to.

Of course they do. They have managed at that level so can talk with authority about tactics and can say "I would have done this differently" with authority.

Game has changed a fair bit since they played, though. Was there such a thing as an inverted winger when Shearer played? Other things like that and let's not forget that the Premier League has more players from abroad adding to the quality of play I'd say.

I'd prefer it if they just came out and admitted they have no knowledge or interest in the lesser teams rather than attempt an opinion and embarrass themselves

There's no guarantee that they will be good pundits but they have played at that level and can therefore talk with authority about it. No female player has ever played at a level with as much power and pace. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with Keegan but he has a legit opinion.

Most people listening to him don't care about the lesser teams either. They are never going to give AFCB and the like equal billing. Not worth getting annoyed about imo.

Rubbish. Both of your examples played reserve football and amateur levels.
If you were ever picked for your school at over the age of 12 you have played a higher standard of football than any female player
