Fair play Andoni

We rarely press the opposition goal keeper. The trigger for the press was when the keeper played the first pass to one of the defenders. We definitely were attempting to press and were getting played through with ease. We changed in the second half to a more compact shape.
I'm pretty sure I remember us pressing the Newcastle keeper!......seriously no attempt by us to press in that first half......very apparent that we set up to let them have the ball and play on the counter.

Did the low press have to do with Solanke not being fully fit?
Possibly although he got though plenty of running...... Sat a deeper in the first half than he has so far this season under Al........more like the sort of performance we saw from him last season.

Partially, though I think Christie being off today (and his sub, Scott, having played 120 midweek) had a bigger impact on our inability to get the usual press working. Even with a 100% fit Solanke pressing I think we'd have struggled to implement it with today's midfield. I'd expect that with a week of rest we should be back to usual programming against Sheffield United.

At the end of the day it was 3 points... I too was a little troubled at how much possession we were giving away to a team that last won against ten man Sheffield Utd, sometime in 2023, however, as the game went on it was clear this was actually intentional.

As others have pointed out, we barely pressed the keeper or their defenders, until they got to a point where letting them move the ball further up-field would become a threat.

We also punted every goal kick downfield... Something we rarely do. As the game went on it was obvious we were just gonna ride out any sort of Burnley attack and counter on them, probably as a result of Solanke not being the most mobile atm and because we've had 2 tough games in the last 7 days... Make a poor team do the leg work, not us...

On one hand you could argue some of our form today was concerning, on the other hand you could say well done Iraola for doing something different, and something that was just enough for us to grab 3 points, which actually ended up being quite comfortable...

Tav 'was' woeful in possession today... and has been for some time, but a 2 is ridiculous... I was surprised at him being on past 60 mins, but he keeps plugging away and defensively, he is more of an asset than Sinisterra... I would be comfortable with him being a 6. He'll regain his form, but I would drop him for a few games personally... Playing him week in week out is making little difference.

I thought they deliberately left Trafford alone so he couldn't play a short pass, he often stood, moved forward a bit, stood some more and then kicked long. It seemed like we wanted him to do that.
We did the same against Brighton this season..... They keeper is looking for the straight pass into a midfielder who can then pop it off either side of him......we tried to block off the passing lanes so he had to go long......it wasn't working in the first half because Cook and Christie were too slow to react to the midfielder dropping from deep so that straight pass was always on.........we corrected that in the second half and forced them to go long more often.

Sky Sports ratings.

Bournemouth: Neto (8); Smith (7), Zabarnyi (7), Senesi (n/a), Kerkez (7); Cook (9), Christie (6), Kluivert (8); Tavernier (7), Solanke (7), Semenyo (8)

Subs:Mepham (7), Scott (7), Biling (6), Unal (n/a), Ouattara (n/a)

A 2 - 0 Away Win for any Tinpot club in this league is more than adequate...so any criticism should be brief and understated.....
We weren't good early on in the game...and a Burnley goal would have got their crowd going and setting down a hope of a revival from 16 points...but we held on, took charge, and Burnley look totally shot now...

You don't press the opposition keeper you press the defenders.

If you press the keeper you leave a defender unmarked who he can pass to!
