Congrats to Pompey

I really should say feck 'em. Recall that game in the 80's (1983?)when we rocked up and they'd taken the South End. Not only that but having got in they battered us down to the New stand corner, then into the New stand.

Our last game at their place? At Fratton station we were channelled towards one end of the platform, they had the other end with cops between. A train comes in and stops. They board it from their end walk down the train and get off the train at our end fists flying. Clever barstewards but no love lost.

Agree phuck 'em and they won't have their derby back because the scummers look like they'll come back up.

Was that the cup game a few years back?

Yep. Ritchie and Pugh came on and we turned it around, just moved up a gear, naturally they didn't like it . They also attacked a pub pre match down at Gunwharf quays area where they thought we were (The Ship Anson).

Yeah I had some pals that were in that pub I think. We were in a big throng walking back to fratton station and one old boy took particular exception to some boisterous cherries fans and just started swinging. Little bloke who had probably 45 years on the lads he was trying to lump but he was bang up for it. Nearly caused a riot.

There was also bother in the Old Pompey area before the league match in Lge1, first match of the season.

I was on holiday somewhere for that game. I was gutted when the fixture list came out and it turned out I'd be missing the one game I wanted to go to more than any other that season. Weirdly we drew them a month or so later in the Johnson's Paint and I went to that to try and make myself feel better.

Been to every Portsmouth game for the last 20 years or so (which isn't that many!). The vast majority were absolutely fine, one year we were even announced as "the friendly derby" so that last one really caught me off guard.

Got a tip off from from some Pompey fans on the train that they had trouble with fan violence recently and to be careful.

I was going out that evening in Pompey so we changed tops in the bogs at the ground. Good job we did because all hell was breaking loose on streets, mounted police and riot shields the lot.

Got some mates who are Pompey fans and some of the nicest people you'll ever met but it also has that rough element. I suppose it's emblematic of Portsmouth as a whole.

YEah doesnt surprise me. Think someone mentioned before, but has a different kind of vibe to most ofther places down south imo.

Defo a strong working class element, who wouldn't take any sh1t/be shy of a bit of aggro.

Bet its 'interesting' when they play Southampton. Been a little bit trouble, edge at times walking back to station from St Marys. Must be very high octane when the arch rivals meet.

Tempted to go up there to observe it when they do meet again (from a good distance away, cowering behind a wall).

Bet the atmosphere is electric in the stadium when they meet. Non stop singing from thousands all around ground.

Proper football town, all the pubs have Pompey stuff on the walls, not many MU and Arsenal shirts about, don't think they would stand for soft searches and "pat down" before home games.........

Yeah, they are vociferous bunch imo.

The police were particularly 'robust' at their place in the 80s. Me and my mate were pulled into a wagon over a very minor incident. We were both physically shown the error of our ways and then booted out. At least no court appearance. Happy days!
