Safe standing

I don't think we have the same security measures in the East Stand tbh. Quick pat down and you're in. I've never taken my hat off.

I think it’s similar for the main stand, neither myself or the wife have a real issue (my wife would obviously prefer more female stewards for the pat down and bag search but as we want to actually get in quickly she just gets on with it).

My only gripe is my primary school age boy getting spoken to and asked how old he is every week. He’s clearly uncomfortable with it, puts his head down ignores the steward and walks past… all just feels unnecessary.

This gets to the crux of the problem for me.

When the entry checks are at their more extreme end, not only our we way out of kilter with the rest of football club security up and down the country (they don't realise many of us do visit dozens of other clubs each year, and as away fans at that) but they're applied inconsistently from week to week or turnstile to turnstile. The experience away from home is consistently less invasive, despite most clubs being understandably more suspect of away fans.

That's a vague moan, not a specific question. So if I had one specific question to ask or issue to raise, it would be:

Regards the insisting of the more.... mature... ladies and gentlemen in our ranks to remove hats and open coats on cold/wet day and evenings as Slaphead describes. I'm sure he's fighting fit, but I know some are more vulnerable, and no common sense is being applied here.

Do they really think 70 and 80 odd year olds are going to be smuggling in the pyrotechnics? I would far rather be 'picked' for such a search myself if it spared more learnered gents the hassle and indignity. It would get the queues moving quicker too, so everyone would win.

I’m 79 years old, been coming to DC since I was 12. I have never felt so angry at what is happening with regard to the degrading, insulting searching of us “customers”! “Can you take your hat off Sir?” What’s that about?? And this after trudging through the p*****g rain because someone thinks my brolly is a military grade spear! As others have suggested, get the security “Expert” to go to a couple of away games and see how “proper” clubs do security.
And JF, don’t try to tell us you have the same security methods at the main entrance because that’s BS.
I disagree. I go through the main entrance and my bag is checked and I’m scanned. I still haven’t got a pyro past them yet ;-)

For all we know some older people might have tried to smuggle things in.

Then ban them and let others get on with getting in.

Unless there’s some kind of older persons pyro smuggling gang it’s still disproportionate.

You're speaking to the guy aren't you? You could ask why they search older people and if people get banned if found trying to sneak things in. Maybe ask if they are also trying to find Just Stop Oil paraphernalia.

I am, but I was replying to you!

And is the JSO thing serious?

Playing devils advocate here as it does feel heavy handed at Dean Court.
If checks are applied selectively you're profiling people, effectively saying "this type of person is the problem". While that might be statistically more likely it opens you up to all kinds of problems. For example, you could make a case of being discriminated for your age under the Equality Act 2010.

Personally, I've been on the end of profiling and it's not pleasant but understandable. It's a "greater good" thing to me.

Yeah why not ask him. You won't get any answers out of me I don't have a clue why they do what they do.

It's the second time you've raised the JSO thing, no one else has.

Are they even a thing now ? Even so searching several thousand old folk because someone might 'smuggle something in' is totally disproportionate.

I've no idea that's why I said Rob should ask the guy. I can't think of any other reason they would search old people unless they have examples of some of them sneaking other things in.

Tbh I disagree with you about searching at away grounds, my experience is that I get searched away same as I do at home. PL grounds are clearly a threat for all sorts of reasons and it isn't like old people are just waved through other security checks, eg airports, because it's only a few bad apples.

People get searched at airports to stop them blowing airliners up or taking hostages. The fact you're linking the two explains your stance, no sense of proportionality.

What is an OAP going to do at a football ground ffs and what 'are these threats for all sorts of reasons'?

No idea why you appear to be holding me responsible for the way you are searched in whatever stand you sit in. I am patted down going into the East Stand just as I am going into away games. Old people treated the same and I don't see what the issue is. Jim F has said you can email the guy, ask him.

They don't make me take my belt and shoes off and put it through a scanner at DC so I don't see why you think I've said it's the same as the airports. The point I was making is that people don't generally get special treatment in security searches.

I'm not holding you responsible but yet again you come on here arguing the toss then turn around and say its nothing to do with you, you have no idea why they do it then make up some reasons for why they might be doing it.

If the subject doesn't affect you perhaps just ignore it and move on ?

I am speculating on the reasons why they do it. I couldn't have said more times that I don't actually know why they do it. Why shouldn't I speculate and give my perspective that this isn't universal in all stands at DC?

I can understand the searching to deter flares
But why confiscate umbrellas and flasks if it's flares they are looking for, once a steward establishes that my umbrella is an umbrella why can't I take it in?
There must be more to it Jim

I think searching at all grounds is completely random. You’d think there would be hightened security for an international at Wembley, let alone one against Ukraine during a war. But there wasn’t, we didn’t get patted down, there wasn’t even a police presence on Olympic Way. You’re allowed to take photos without being hurried along by a steward.

Are they checking for gardening tools, trowels, weeding forks etc, under old people's hats. I know those George Davies is innocent people have been quiet for a while but some of the younger ones are old now. They dug up Headingly once : )
