AFCB Not Won Away Against Palace Since 2015-16 Season

After again failing to defend crosses, our side suffered a 1-3 defeat against Chelsea, their first win and points under Frank Lampard since his return. We next meet another London team when our side and fans travel to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace next Saturday at 3 pm. It’s a game between two sides relatively safe with Crystal Palace in 12th place with 40 points and the Cherries two places and 1 point less in 14th place. AFCB have not won at Selhurst Park since 2015-16 season, our first time in the top league.

When our sides last met on New Year’s Eve at Dean Court, the Crystal Palace manager was Patrick Vieira. Palace won 0-2 and it was Viera’s last win as their manager. Following that game both home and away Palace drew 5 and lost 6 games and he was sacked on the 17th March.

Crystal Palace turned to their old manager Roy Hodgson to come back as manager until the end of the season, he is the oldest Premier League manager at 75 years old. His first game back in charge was at home against Leicester City on the 1st April. Palace won 2-1, that was their first win since the game at Dean Court in December. That was followed with two more wins, both away against Leeds United 1-5 and Southampton 0-2. Back home at Selhurst Park, Hodgson saw his first draw 0-0 against Everton. Then came his first defeat away against Wolves 2-0. This was followed by a seven goal thriller back home, Palace coming out 4-3 winners against West Ham. Palace’s last game was away against Spurs which ended in a 1-0 defeat.

AFCB’s last visit to Selhurst Park was in December 2019, Palace won 1-0 after playing with 10 men from the 19th minute when Mamadou Sakho was sent off for a foul on Adam Smith. The winning goal came in the 76th minute from Jeffrey Schlupp.

On our visits in the league to play Crystal Palace, AFCB have W 7, D 9, L 21.
All competitions, AFCB have W 29, D 20, L 27.

Crystal Palace Team News
They signed two midfielders in January, Naouirou Ahamada for £9,700,000 from Stuttgart and on loan from Arsenal, Albert Sambi Lokonga.
Players out injured, James McArthur, James Tomkins and Nathan Ferguson.

Crystal Palace Player To Watch
Michael Olise with his pinpoint corners, free kicks and passes. He is top with 9 assists. He was outstanding in their away game at Leeds, providing 3 assists. Also with our weakness at defending corners, free kicks and crosses, Jordan Ayew will be dangerous, he scored from a corner from Olise at Dean Court. Another player who has performed well for Palace recently with 4 goals in the last 6 games is Eberechi Eze, total of 8 goals, their highest scorer this season so far, including one at Dean Court, again it was assisted by Olise.

AFCB Team News
Kieffer Moore should be available again, otherwise the four we know about who are out injured.

AFCB Player To Watch
With three games to go and his future with AFCB undecided, Matias Vina will be one to watch. We know he is an exciting player to watch when he goes forward in an attacking role, but in his defensive role on the left it will be interesting how he copes with Michael Olise. Also our defence will be under scrutiny to see if they have learnt from goals conceded from crosses into our goal area.

The Referee
Michael Salisbury is in charge of this game. He has taken three of our Premier League games this season. At home against Leicester City, two away games against Manchester United and Wolves. Also the away League Cup game with Norwich City.

Decent teams Hodgson's Palace have defeated: West Ham, arguably. That's it. Under the circumstances, with survival available, I want to see AFCB hang a solid loss on them.

Would be nice to see a decent performance here after the travesty of our last Palace match. Would like us to finish the season with a bang and take some momentum in to next season.

United and Everton will be very difficult games, so a good chance we finish the season on 39 points if we don't get anything on Saturday, which would be a bit of a shame given our April form.

whoa that is some run of fixtures they had, I forgot they would play a big part,
I wouldn't change it for the world as they literally took points off of everyone around us!!

Last 2 Palace matches. They feel like a real bogey team for us despite being around the same level, would love to see us smash them with a comfortable multiple goal lead.

Who knows what to expect from us. I’m definitely leaning towards us grinding out a close win. I think we are safe and it would be nice if we played a game free of nerves just go and enjoy it and hammer them

I’ve looked at the last 4 league games for Palace. They were home to Everton and W Ham and away to Wolves and Spurs. They picked up 4 points from these games, which seems a fair reward with xG suggesting all games have been relatively close. Palace have scored 4 goals and conceded 6, whereas xG predicted 3.77 and 4.49.

The average positions of the starting line-ups are below. Palace appear to prefer playing down their left through Zaha.

Av Positions.JPG

Palace have had 4 scorers all against W Ham (Ayew, Zaha, Schlupp and Eze) with only one credited assist (to Olise).

The following graph compares summary stats of Palace and AFCB over the last 4 games.

Comparison.JPG

AFCB have created more chances, more big chances, and fewer big chances conceded than Palace. We had a higher xG and a higher xGc (xG conceded) than Palace. The game looks fairly evenly balanced

As shown, Palace have had more possession over the last four games. AFCB create more chances from open play rather than set pieces, and maybe surprisingly concede less chances from set plays than do Palace.

No surprise to see Zaha and his dives up there. Call me cynical, but Palace having the top two in a team that hasn't exactly been all over their opposition tells us what to expect tomorrow. Expect us to need to defend well to keep out lots of attacking free kicks given for little or nothing.

Houston, we have a problem...

Just seen this on the BBC Sport website

"Saturday is a big day for teams at the top and bottom of the Premier League - the day's six fixtures are: Leeds v Newcastle, Aston Villa v Tottenham, Southampton v Fulham, Manchester United v Wolves and Chelsea v Nottingham Forest."

So we're not even worth mentioning now!!

Ayew is a master of the 'run towards the ball then abruptly stop so that the chasing defender goes into the back of you' tactic. He's the football equivalent of the 'slam on' car insurance scam

It was Palace’s fourth straight league victory over Bournemouth since 2019, and the Eagles haven’t lost at Selhurst Park to the Cherries since 1989.

Hmm.

Roy Hodgson has said that Luka Milivojevic is unavailable, and Jeffrey Schlupp a doubt, for Crystal Palace’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Providing a fitness update in his pre-match press conference, Hodgson told reporters: “Unfortunately we’ve lost Luka Milivojevic to an injury in training this week. His name gets added to the ones who have been injured for a while.

“[James] McArthur is actually back. We’ve got a doubt for Jeffrey Schlupp who’s been nursing a slight knock during the course of this week, so we’ll make a late decision on him.”

Crystal Palace will offer supporters with visual impairments new technology that helps enhance their sight and their matchday experience, at this Saturday’s ‘Palace for All’ matchday against Bournemouth.

Selhurst Park is set to become the first sports-based arena in the world to pilot Give Vision, an innovative technology which utilises a headset to provide a video feed adaptable to supporters’ varying levels of sight.

Viewers of the feed will experience an enhanced image and can edit its properties, such as brightness and contrast, according to their needs.
