Deadline danger

Very close to transfer deadline now. If the club has really been negotiating for reinforcements someone needs to act quickly - there's little point in playing transfer poker if we're left with nothing on Friday. Last January we failed to bring in key recruits, of which the most important was a creative midfielder. That IMO sealed our fate.

We still need a midfielder and a striker - and poss a further CB. I don't like the silence from DC.

I like the silence: better than all that Twittersphere speculation.

However, I hope that lack of information means that management are busy working under the radar to get players in while, at the same time, trying to prepare to meet QPR on Saturday.

I wouldn't hold your hopes too high of anything happening, it's all pretty quiet from what I can see from all clubs. King hopefully just the one out, I think the best we will get is a youngster on loan.

That would worry me, especially after the outgoings. We are vulnerable in key areas ... with a couple of injuries at CB for example we are very exposed. And just two specialist strikers? ... that's asking for trouble. I can see that one of the youngsters might come through for midfield ... maybe. This squad is light - lots of potential but could be exposed during a relentless schedule.

...fair to say that I don't think that we will see much in terms of players coming in, we are well positioned to maintain our Championship status at worse and with what we have will probably be around the top six on a reasonably tight budget?

I truly hope the club don’t take that outlook, we are just a few injuries away from relying on completely untested youngsters.

Maintaining our Championship status is fine, and I don't think any of us genuinely fear the trap door two seasons in a row.

However, the board stuck a message out to the fans that suggested we were aiming to 'Get back where we belong'

And with circa 90 million in outgoing sales and nothing in the loss column on current signings, let's hope the boards ambition wasn't League 2, when the fans had an eye on playing Brighton again, in the promised land.

Wouldn’t that apply to all our rivals.
I think unless you are one of the top PL teams you have to hope for luck with injuries. I couldn't believe how lucky we were in our Championship winning season. I don't think we'd ever had a season with so few injuries. To be fair, we have made up for that ever since

High numbers of injuries, a few longer term injuries or injuries to key players for key matches can always derail a season. I think as a manager ( outside of the top PL clubs ) you just have to look at the squad you have as if they will all stay fit.
Whether or not that happens is out of your control, you just hope for some good fortune and minimal bad luck.

Cover is always nice but I think at this level with the money available we will not have the luxury of having cover of equivalent quality. If the brown stuff hits the ventilator we will be back to promoting the kids, just like we used to do !
I think that would apply to most teams in this league too.

Let's face it, we've rarely had advance information of any signing. We could be either surprised or shocked! Preferably not the latter!

Let's just see how the players we've got perform....and find out good they really are...it will answer some of the questions of EH's choices and what all that was about in the last two or three seasons ..the coaching, moulding/nurturing, the hype, the loans out, the bad luck, the injury effect.. and so on.
Then...if it all falls apart....have a clean sweep clear out...next summer, with or without Jason...hopefully with Jason and his own squad.

Just been listening to TS, with Alex Crook on there discussing King and other movement. The key was that there isn't much movement anywhere.

They made a good point in that a lot of clubs that are settled atm, will be looking at doing business now, for the January transfer window, which is only 10 weeks away, so that they can do things properly, as opposed to the usual really bad panic buys... In these uncertain times, clubs will be looking to have a hard look at what they actually have, and what these players can do, and then maybe reinforce in 10 weeks' time and push on from then.

With that scenario, we have more than enough to see us stay top 6 for the next couple of months... JT can really assess where we lack depth, strength etc. With Danjuma, Mepham, Brooks and Stan spending more time in the physio room than on the pitch maybe we want to see what impact these players can have in the first part of the season, before we commit to spending in Jan...

I just don't know which way the King situation is going to go...

Didn't you want to play these completely untested youngsters in the PL?
Exactly.

If it comes to that, it might not be the ideal, but they should be fairly comfortable to play at this level. In our position there is not a lot more we can hope for, we can't have 11 PL quality players waiting in the wings in case somebody gets injured. The wage bill would be way beyond our means.

In general we will, as will many teams, be hoping for a bit of luck on the injury front, otherwise our perceived qualitative advantage could end up being eroded somewhat.

I'd still like to see us sign a promising player or two on loan, just to add some depth for sensible money, but if it doesn't happen we will just have to ride our luck and hope that the injury curse doesn't hit us too harshly.

According to AFCB website we have 3 attackers + King
11 midfielders, 8 defenders. 3 goalkeepers.
Dan and Stan could also be named as attackers.

I wanted to play Surridge in the Prem, and I’d have liked to have seen Kilkenny given a chance yeah. I’m more referring to the fact that if our two senior forwards get injured then we are potentially relying on Jadon Anthony. As promising a player as he is this is a huge risk. Assuming King goes of course
