From Charles H Mate's Biography of Bournemouth written in 1910.

"Football in the district has been played regularly for years. Our earliest record of a club is that of Bournemouth Football Club established in 1875.

Since that time the clubs of the town, without attaining greatness, have made a certain degree of fame for themselves by their appearances in competitions principally connected with the county. We cannot avoid expressing our pleasure that our local clubs are still amateur organisations and not professional. Geographically situated as we are it is very doubtful that a professional team of any consequence will ever be established here."

To be fair to the author Boscombe FC only moved to Kings Park in 1910

Wrong thread? (this ain't the Summer Game)
Or is dragonm8 a descendant of Charles H Mate?

Anyhow, back to the topic, the author was bang-on with respect to the Poppies, but way off on the Cherries.
Not sure about the crabapples . . .

The local team formed before Bournemouth Rovers FC now Bournemouth FC was Fordingbridge Turks FC in 1868. The Turks are in the top 20 oldest clubs.
