Left field idea

Reading in today’s Independent, it’s suggested that until England have a quality centre half to build the defence around they will not win a World Cup. Southgate might not agree, but with Maguire, Stones, Mings and the other two tried recently seemingly not up to the job, could there be an opening for a young, rapidly improving central defender, especially if he shines in the first few months of the season ?
In his early days young Lloyd reminded me quite a bit of Des Walker, fast, agile and able to distribute the ball rather than a mighty hoof upfield.
Crazy idea ?

“Crazy idea?” In a word yes.

First and foremost, England don’t select players from small clubs for major tournaments. Secondly, for all his excellent attributes, Kelly has at least one or two batshit lapses in concentration every game.

And the others don’t ?

It's not the craziest idea. Worrall and Kelly could be good. They can't exactly do worse than Maguire and Stones. The only plus of having M and S is that they score quite often for defenders. But they can't defend.
