Non-Amusement Parks,Zoos,etc?

Marwell doesn’t seem to have recovered well since the pandemic

We went a couple of years ago and found it very expensive and disappointing. They don't seem to have many animals and it's all a bit tatty. Kids not impressed and judging by talking to friends and TripAdvisor we're not the only ones who thought that.

We have not been there for a good number of years.

It always seemed a nice place to go and see most of the animals outside and not in cages.

Found this story from yesterday.

Marwell has also been announced as a finalist for this year's WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) Conservation Award for its work reintroducing extinct-in-the-wild scimitar-horned oryx in North Africa.

Longleat much better. As its 'safari' you're in your car more, but it has more animals, wider variety. I went last summer.

A colleague went to both and also though marwell wasn't great these days.

Zoo's and other caging environments should be shut down and animals allowed back to their natural habitat. End of. Fullstop

Amusement Parks are potential Death.

Now then..don't go getting your knickers in a twist ...it's only a f√cking opinion ! ;)

I take it you never leave the house in case you get attacked or hit by a car?
There's risk to everything. The amount of people that die at a theme park are millescule. As in odds of 1 in billions I'd have thought.

Less risk of bumping into anyone at a Cornish non-league game though.

Yep. But iirc, Brian did have to be escorted out once after getting into some alteration with fans/players.

Seems more risk of injury or perishing whilst going to Cornish non league games than Paultons Park... if Old Cherry is at the game ;)

There is that thought in the back of my mind about zoos, are they really a good thing? As Rob says they often do decent enough things for preservation but you do wonder if that's just window dressing to convince people to hand over their money.

I think it's a matter of time before they disappear/almost disappear.

At Seaworld orlando the shows have been dramatically 'watered' down.

They announce that they now respect the mamals choice and if they don't want to perform certain acts they are no longer coerced/forced like before.

When the killer whale/orca brothers (iirc) didn't do some move after a couple of minutes, they reiterated the message and said that's the end of the show (to widespread groans from the thousands in the stadium) and to come back for the next show in a few hours, when the killer whales may be in the mood.

Those things are massive aren't they and although they can swim around, it can't emulate their habitat in the ocean, where they swim freely for god only knows how many miles a day.

There is a place for breeding in artificial environments to keep certain species in existence, but that doesnt apply to many that are in captivity. Not sure how much stress it causes some/all of them tbh.

zoos are more concerned with conservation, rather than preservation -unless they also sell 'Lion pickle' in the zoo shop.

It’s a hard one for me, especially any zoo, Safari, marine park that has large animals.

You’d never set one up from scratch today, they’re from a different time.

Equally you could never remove the animals and release them into the wild as they wouldn’t survive. In some circumstances having captive animals enables us to save a wild animal from not surviving and giving them a home, without being in isolation , it’s not ideal, it’s not like the wild, but they’re alive at least.

I think many have come a long way from just a decade ago. They raise money for conservation and breeding programmes and they captivate children, sparking a passion that could last a lifetime and who knows what they could become.

They have a place. But who knows what they’ll look like in 10-20 years.

Before you know it this will be the case at Dean Court. 3:05 on a Saturday... "Sorry lads Phillip just isn't feeling it today so let's all try again next week"

Bear in mind most theme parks (Alton towers, Thorpe park etc ) close from the end of October to beginning of Easter holidays!

Lloyd Kelly would certainly have an argument.

Forced into an artificial environment to kick a ball around and heckled/booed by thousands of fans.

He should be allowed to roam the land freely as God intended, foraging for berries and firewood. Can't imagine the stress it must cause him and other footballers.

We've had plenty of donkeys and cart horses roam around our pitch over the years that's for sure.

Interesting two articles from different websites.

The first one puts the pros and cons of zoos.

Long but informative read.

She also worked as a business analyst with the International Species Information System (now called Species360), and was part of the team that developed standards on different animal and enclosure parameters. In this blog, Nabila considers the human fascination with animals – which starts very early in childhood – and the millions of people that visit zoos around the world each year to observe wildlife, as she explores the conservation mission of zoos.

A visit to a zoo or an aquarium is an opportunity to see the beautiful and diverse wildlife our world has to offer. Zoos and aquariums around the world offer an incredible up close and personal view of nature.

More than 230 top zoos and top aquariums of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) work to provide safe habitats, medical care, and a nurturing environment for their animals. AZA and our members work to protect endangered species in numerous ways, including:

  • Conducting, supporting, and funding research and conservation
  • Advocating for conservation and wildlife, funding, and science
  • Working with government agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and other partners to establish conservation initiatives
