NON - Leslie Phillips

RIP. A voice that was always around. Especially enjoyed The Navy Lark. Great days of radio.

His son used to work for Skandia in Southampton, and was the spitting image of his dad, both in appearance and in the sound of his voice.

I met him professionally two or three times and each time desperately had to suppress the urge to find a way to get him to say “ding dong”. I don’t think I have ever been so distracted in a business meeting.

RIP the old fella.

At the first Navy Mess Dinner I was ever involved in being part of the catering team, he came and did the after dinner speech, in uniform, and with the 2nd guest being actress Carole Cleveland all dolled up, playing the part of his mistress.
I know no more than that, as we were behind the scenes. But the laughter was audible for ages.
I can imagine it would be to over the top for today's audience.
The next morning there was a hand written note from Leslie saying how much he enjoyed the food.

Top Man. RIP
