Yes, when they changed their name to "Royals" I thought it was cringeworthy. One of the things I like about English football is the colourful history and tradition behind the various nicknames, all reflecting local character and industries.

Wouldn't life be duller without The Saddlers, The Hatters, The Cobblers, The Gas, and so on ? Even worse when they try to replace the old nickname with a supposedly cool, contemporary one.

Lots of people might think "The Cherries" is a bit naff. But I love our nickname. Can you imagine how embarrassing it would be if some marketing nitwit decided to change our nickname to The Jets, or something equally stupid ?
