Players feigning injury / time wasting

Notwithstanding our poor second half performance yesterday, the ref didn't have a clue how to manage the game as a form of entertainment. No attempt to hurry their restarts either verbally or body language, it just seemed too much for him.

Any bits of momentum we managed to build were quickly rubbed out by multiple stoppages. The players returning to the pitch after "treatment" didn't even bother to limp when they came back on - one even did a full 30 yard sprit to get back into position ffs

The added nine minutes were irrelevant as we'd totally lost the plot by then.

At what point can the referee decide enough is enough, disregard players going to ground, clearly uninjured, and let play continue?

I don't think we can take take the moral high ground on this tbh..... we've done it ourselves in the past.....Hull are scrapping for their lives .

The only time he did play on for a while was when Davis got a vicious elbow in the face in our penalty area that practically knocked him out. He waited for them to have a shot on goal before stopping play.

It felt like they had 13 people on the pitch most of the 2nd half.

Might need to bring in a rule where the length of time gets extended before the player re-joins the action. Say a minute the first time the physios come on and then two minutes the next time and so on.

Treat the players on the pitch like rugby and continue the game.. Therefore no injury time not even the 12 plus that should have been added yesterday......the feigning injury will soon stop.

We do it too. Doesn’t make it right. There needs to be rules brought in on this. You should be treated off the pitch instantly (quick stretcher teams) and the game allowed to continue. Managers allowed to make instant subs if necessary. I know the counter argument is genuine injuries but how often to you see players go off? And when they do, like Mepham yesterday, they know they are going to have to.

Originally the plan was for players requiring attention to be taken off the pitch, on a stretcher if necessary. Obviously not if it's an immediately obvious bad injury, which is rare.

If the player is mobile get them off the pitch.

I agree that this is frustrating as hell and ruins the game as a spectacle completely. I even hate it when we do it. I like the idea of a system in which any time a player goes down they are immediately stretchered off to the side of the pitch to allow play to continue. If they are play acting then there will be no incentive to do this anymore, if they are genuinely injured then they can just be substituted immediately.

It's a fucking disgrace when ever any team does it including us. If this is how the game is going it'll do more damage to the entertainment than VAR. The rule should be that all teams play on unless there is a serious injury that needs immediate treatment. You got cramp or have taken a knock? Tough luck, get on with it. You're not going to die if you don't get seen for a minute or two. Whenever there's a serious injury it's obvious and everyone naturally stops.

There should be no occasion where a player has carried on then sits down of their own accord only for the ref to stop play.

It happened in the Man City game yesterday. A Southampton player went down and the physio wasn't even treating him!
The lesser sides in the respective leagues are all doing this now to break up momentum. I don't think the refereee can do much - they stop the game for incidents in the crowd now. I think they should strictly add on injury time, as yesterday, though it isn't the same as momentum is lost.
It is an issue that needs addressing though.
As soneone said here, an early goal or the first goal is vital against such teams.

couldn't agree more, it's sucking the life out of the game, as entertainment, as much as the now ubiquitous minimal contact cheap free kick

ref's need to be given a directive that their primary job is to let the game continue

Interesting when that big lump up front went down the ref refused to let him come straight back on. Hull got agitated at the delay. That’s the way to stop it.

In the Luton match, the ref let things go and it was very enjoyable despite the finish. Yesterday's guy was clueless and inconsistent.

It brings back a discussion regarding the clock. KT mentioned it yesterday and it also was evident in the Watford-Norwich game with the long delay as some of the lights went out. As a North American-based fan, stopping the clock in other sports is quite normal, but I realize that it ain't going to happen with football.

But how about a running declaration of Time Added On, for at least the second half? For any of the following, have the fourth official record time for a stoppage, and then declare it:
> injuries where training staff comes on;
> goal celebrations.
> substitutions.

For instance, Bernard was down for just over two minutes the first time. Once play resumes, fourth official shows time to be added on. Next time it happens, cumulative time is shown. Doesn't change the fabric of the game, but adds transparancy. We got 9 minutes yesterday, but it might have just as easily been only 6.

In addition, ref can add discretionary time for obvious time-wasting .... goal-keeper kicks come to mind. But this would just a minute or two over a half if the other elements are removed.

edit .... would also mention that VAR stoppage would be the fourth criterion.

we dont do it like Blackburn, Luton and Hull. Its deliberately spoiling any flow in the game. Particularly galling Luton won the game in their own wasted time.
