Reading v AFC Bournemouth

Our referee for this game is Oliver Langford.

Last season he was in charge of our home game against Huddersfield Town and the Derby County away game.

Surprising to see that our average goals per game is pretty low compared to most but I guess if you don't concede, you don't need to score as many goals.

It may be an indicator that the defensive work our players put in as a team has a detrimental effect on our chances of creating goals compared to other teams ?

To be honest, I'm enjoying us being tight at the back ( oooooer missus  ) and if we continue like that then an average of 2 goals per game should still be plenty !

One important stat that is missing will be in the preview, they have a lot of injuries and also to key players.

I don't really like stats they confuse me and I'm not into thinking they have any relevance on the approaching game. SP 'takes each game as it comes'. I expect many on the Forum find them interesting but they're not for me. I see them on tv all the time by their reporters who need something to fill up their reporting time. This too gets on my pip but I do have an on/off button nearby, but I've learned over many seasons how to bite the bullet

I'd estimate that 55.4231% of people agree with you. :)

Short Away Trip For Club and the Fans

What a great start to the season, after 14 games and with 10 wins and 4 draws our team are sitting top of the Championship with 34 points, 5 points more than the team in second place Fulham. This must be the highest number of points from that number of games for many a season in the Championship. The first half performance was one of the best I have seen from this side, dominating possession and outclassing the Huddersfield Town side who up to this game had gone three games with a clean sheet. Two early goals from Dominic Solanke and a second half one from Lloyd Kelly decided this game, that is 8 goals the Yorkshire side have conceded in their last two visits to Dean Court. No midweek game this time and our team are in action again on Saturday evening at 8 pm in front of the Sky cameras away at Reading, the shortest away trip for our club and fans in the League.

Last season Reading were the pacemakers and after 8 games were 7 points clear at the top of the Championship after 7 wins and a draw with 22 points. But they then lost their next 4 games including the last of the four at Dean Court. Then at the same stage last season after 14 games they had dropped down into 4th place with 26 points. The three teams that would eventually get promoted were in the top seven, two automatically promoted Norwich were top with 28 points, AFCB second 27 points and Watford third 26 points with Brentford seventh on 23 points.

The Reading manager Velijko Paunovic is in his second season with the club. Reading have signed six players, three free transfer and three on loan. Amongst their free signings is Scott Dann from Crystal Palace. Amongst a number who have left the club is 19-year-old midfielder Michael Olise who was Reading’s highest player with 12 assists in the league last season, he was also their third highest scorer with 7, he joined Crystal Palace for a reported £8 million.

Reading are known as the Royals, the nickname coming from them being in the Royal County of Berkshire, but they were previously known as the Biscuitmen as Huntley & Palmers biscuits were based there until their closure in the 1970’s. This season in their opening 8 games Reading have had a mixed start, winning 3, drawn 1 and lost 4. The last 6 games they have won 3, lost 3. At home they have beaten Preston, Peterborough, Middlesbrough and Barnsley. Drew with QPR and lost to Bristol City and Blackpool. Away they are the only team to have won at Fulham and also beaten Cardiff City. They have lost at Stoke City, Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers. Reading are 13th in the table with 19 points.

Over the years on our visits to play Reading we have had some very tight results, the last six games decided by the only goal or two, plus two draws, 2-2 and 3-3. Last season we were losing 3-0 by half-time and a goal with five minutes of normal time of the game to go, Junior Stanislas scored the only goal of the second half.

In all our league games away at Reading, AFCB have W 14, D 8, L 31.
All competitions, AFCB have W 45, D 24, L 43.

Reading Team News
They have a big injury list, this includes striker Lucas Joao their leading striker last season with 19 league goals, also 7 assists and the second highest scorer Yakou Meite who had 12.

Reading Player To Watch
John Swift is a strong midfield player, leading with 8 goals and 6 assists this season. He has been linked with a number of Premier League teams with a possible move in January.

AFCB Team News
Might be too soon for Adam Smith and Lewis Cook to be involved in the squad, but otherwise no new injuries/illness reported.

AFCB Player To Watch
Reading’s strength is in their midfield at the moment, so Kilkenny, Billing and Lerma being on form will be important to win the midfield ‘battle’, plus Christie’s assists and Solanke’s goals.

Post from one of their fans who is on the South Coast.

The irony with this fixture is the role reversal.

In the Pardew days, and to some extent later, we were perceived by Bournemouth fans as being big spenders who were buying their way towards success at a time when they were struggling badly financially.

Fast forward to just 7 or so years ago we had Reading no longer spending big bucks but Bournemouth spending a fortune to get promoted to the Premier League to such an extent that they ended up being fined around £12,000,000 for breaching FFP.

Since then they have enjoyed financial backing from the owner plus massive income streams by virtue of remaining in the Premier League for 5 yearsand latterly with parachute payments.

During the same period we know what has happened at our club.

Coming right up-to-date we are brassic and seemingly unable to boost our badly depleted squad and Bournemouth have brought in Robbie Brady after the close of the transfer window as a "free" agent to add to an already strong midfield reduced because of the long-term sickness expectation for David Brooks who, incidentally, has hardly played this season.

Events are cyclical but our current place is not so good on or off the pitch.

As for Saturday's game , they are stronger this season in terms of available squad size (despite a number of injuries) whereas we are weaker without Richards, Joao, Olise and Meite.

One area where we can match them for ability is in midfield but without a striker and the defence being the 3rd worst in the division the odds are in their favour.

The bonus for them has been the two left-sided players in Zemura and Anthony who were both on the fringes last season and a Liam Kelly type in central or right midfield in Kilkenny but, as Olise and Richards did for us last season, they have progressed rapidly and are starters taking advantage of Stanislaus' and Lewis Cook's injuries and Brooks' malaise.

Having mentioned our midfield we know that Swift is as good as anybody at this level but he needs to have an on day as does Ejaria who could have success up against Stacey who I feel is a bit of a rare weak link for them.

For them, apart from general play, I fear crosses from corners or set-pieces into our box because, apart from Solanke, they have strength in the air through Cahill, Kelly and Billing and that has not been an area of strength for us.

I will travel up in hope rather than expectation and would just luvvv it if we ended their unbeaten run.

Seen Reading at their home ground 12 times (7 Elm Park), eleven V AFCB.

Two wins apiece at Elm Park and the Mad Stad.

The non-AFCB was when I was going by train to (I think) Windsor & Eton for our FA Cup tie. Arrived at Bournemouth from Dorch to find it had been called off.

So watched a very (off field) violent Thames Valley derby instead.

£12 Million???? Also, we're not currently under an embargo and facing a points reduction........................Unlike Reading.

I hope we smash them. I see Reading as our biggest rivals in my lifetime.

Maybe getting basic spelling right means being taken seriously.
Boracic innit. Like boracic lint, wot I always is, innit guvna.
Sounds like a geezer who thinks the only Homer there ever was liked doughnuts.
I would have thought that they would be near enough to the Bow bells to know that ( with a following wind of course ).
