Thoughts on today

What an awful game to watch. Lucky for us Warnock wasn't there as it was his niggly footballing wet dream and we'd have lost it if he'd have been on the touchline to drive his team forward. It was a warthog wearing make up of a game.

To compound things, the ref was atrocious. That's two weeks running now repeat offenders have escaped a card along with some bad fouls commited against us. I hope it isn't the Championship refs trying to let us know we aren't PL anymore.

I'm desperately trying to find some positives from that performance but I can't. Individual performances were poor. Tactically we were poor. Keeping shape at the back we were poor.

It's a wonder their keeper had to make three decent saves to keep them in it. If they weren't so toothless up front we could have been buried.

Their goal came from a lackadaisical response from Billing when their player sprinted short for a throw whilst he ambled. By the time he realised and half closed him down the cross had come in and someone (Smith?) had allowed his man to get goalside. No chance for Begovic there.

Bego looked alright in places but also let a couple bounce off him that a more predatory team would have put away.

I struggle to think of a significant passage of play from us that I could call good quality football. It was rank and depressing.

The worry is that against Blackburn we were poor and got away with it. The Palace game was like a training exercise so impossible to draw much from. Then today again we were very poor and almost got away with it.

I'm still not sure what it is that Tindall's actually aiming for since in neither match have we had a concerted spell where you could say 'oh, I get it now'.

Today's grade: D-
It would be an E but we somehow escaped with a point.

I don't know what's happening on the training ground but the week ahead needs a lot of hard work and maybe some hard words between the players and coaching staff. Norwich will destroy us if we play like that.

As an aside, when they finally woke up in the 70th minute I thought their fans actually added a little atmosphere and you could see the little extra spring in the steps of the Boro players. It makes the decision not to have home fans v Norwich even more baffling. I hope the club review and reverse their decision on this.

On the plus side, Norwich might be a more “pleasant” opponent for us, than a team like Boro. If they are still playing like it’s the Premier League they’re in, then I’d expect a more open game, which should suit us.
Well, that’s what I’m hoping !
Today’s game was a hard watch.

There were a few positives
-Surridge and Rico were good when they came on
-Solanke had an okay game
Where we really struggled today is midfield, there’s no point in having the attacking talent that we have if you can’t get the ball to them in decent areas. We are always getting outnumbered in the middle of the park, and it allows teams to build sustained periods of pressure against us, while we struggle to get a grip of the game. If we’re going to try and play a progressive passing game then I can’t see this system working.

That's just it, I don't feel like we were trying to play a passing game today. It was more, knock it about between the defenders at the back and then launch it aimlessly.

The one time we did pass to each other we had a devastating counter attack which cut through them like a hot knife through butter and resulted in their keeper saving well from a good Solanke chance.

One move does not a gameplan make though. It felt like that was more the exception rather than the aim.

Its not lack of numbers in midfield thats killing us ....its lack of quality ball players.....look at the difference Arter made this week....even when we put an extra man in midfield today it makes no difference....they can't pass!........its the same problem we've had since Arter ...Pugh and Surman were replaced......we might get away with it in this league most weeks though.....

I chose not to pay for a crap stream, so cant give a personal view of the game
But given we went hours without a shot on target last season , surely there were positives which led to 3 decent attempts on target requiring 'three decent saves ' ?

I’m not so sure, even if you have Arter in there today I’m not sure we’re able to get a grip on the game due to being outnumbered in the middle.

arter probably would have been sent off through niggly fouls and frustration at the overall performance.

Tbf very little of the game was played though midfield ....as you saw when Billing came on having another player in midfield who can't control the ball doesn't change anything.....i'm not a fan of the formation but it's not an excuse for players who can't do the basics.
Getting outfought and outworked by a warnock team is one thing......getting passed off the pitch by them is not acceptable no matter what formation we play.

Arter would have made a difference . Look he can pass the ball . Gosling and Lewis cook can’t. And not good enough

Tbh I don't really see the point of Lerma without someone creative. And as I don't think there's likely to be any buyers for Billing, at least in England, we should sell Lerma and put the money towards a half decent creator. Having Billing, Cook and Gosling would then some kind of sense.

I don’t think there are any buyers for Lerma either
