Vitals Champs & Chumps - 2023/24 Season

An update based on the current standings and "stanthevan" still leads the way by a single point - but our "MostChosen" selection is now in second place.

An update based on the current standings with "Kicks_On_66" having now moved into a three point lead ahead of "stanthevan", with our "MostChosen" selection in third.

Saturday saw the final games of the National League season with Halifax taking the last play off spot behind the run away title winners, Chesterfield.

Since then, controversy in the Play Offs as Gateshead, who finished in 6th spot, have since been kicked out without playing because their council owned ground does not meet Football League standards.

At the bottom, Boreham Wood failed to get the win they needed and so are relegated - twelve months after finishing in the play offs and two years since reaching the 5th Round of the FA Cup (after beating us in the 4th!)

The final day of League Two today saw Crawley take the last play off spot from Barrow who continued their very poor run of form. They join MK Dons, Doncaster & Crewe who will compete to join Stockport, Wrexham & Mansfield in League One next season.

Meanwhile at the bottom, Sutton filled the second relegation spot alongside Forest Green with Colchester surviving.

The final day of League One saw Derby confirm the second automatic promotion spot behind Pompey, whilst Oxford & Barnsley clinched the final two play off spots alongside Bolton & Peterborough.

The unusual things about the predictions at the top was that between us we only chose 5 different teams - and they all made the top 6! This led to the high number of low scores in the final standings.

At the bottom Burton & Cheltenham both lost which means that Burton survive whilst Cheltenham go down with Fleetwood, Port Vale & Carlisle.

Saturday saw Ipswich clinch the second automatic promotion spot behind Leicester whilst West Brom & Norwich secured play off spots to take on Southampton & Leeds respectively.

At the bottom a strange set of results saw Birmingham, despite a win in their final match, join Huddersfield & Rotherham in relegation as all six of the teams immediately above them also won.

So the end of the season yesterday saw AFCB disappointingly miss out on a top ten finish but still end with our best points total for a Premier League season.

Elsewhere the Manchester City monster marched on to a fourth successive title ahead of Arsenal who's best points total for 20 years was still not enough.

Chelsea's win over us clinched 6th place for them, which means that only Man Utd of the "big six" missed out on the top six places with Aston Villa this seasons "outsider" to clinch a Champions League spot.

At the bottom this year saw the three promoted teams all relegated, whereas last season all the promoted three all survived.

Nine players correctly predicted Man City for top spot and Sheff Utd for bottom and so share top spot for this league.

All games now completed and so I can pronounce that the overall winner of the Champs & Chumps Competition for 2023/24 is:

stanthevan :cup:

Congratulations to stanthevan who wins by 3 points from Matt Stevenson (runner up again as last year) and sdrltd55.

The winning score of 18 was the third lowest in the eleven years of this competition and the runners up score of 21 would have won in all but those three seasons.

The winning selection was: Man City, Luton, Leicester, Rotherham, Derby, Cheltenham, Wrexham, Harrogate, Chesterfield & Oxford City.

A very good selection given that Harrogate accounted for 11 of the 18 points scored (as it also did for Matt Stevenson)!

Thanks for running this CB - I think like Arsene Wenger I'm a specialist in losing (copyright Mourinho) - that's 2 C&C and 2 LMS where I've come second, but yet to win anything!

In the voice of Jonathon Agnew "And there it is again! Table just keeps churning out the centuries, just like a hi viz Geoffrey Boycott" : )

Difficult choice next season, Leeds or Saints v Notts Forest to finish bottom of Prem' : )

Many thanks Cherry Bozo for giving up your time to organise these comps, much appreciated : )

Edited to add well done Stan : )
