Lewis Cook

I love this continued myth that Lewis had a shocker against MK Dons. Thats absolute rubbish.

I am one of LC's biggest fans but I was surprised by his poor performance against MK Dons however saying that anyone is entitled to the odd poor game, Surman has many in my opinion.

I also think that because he is generally a breath of fresh air with his energy, vision & passing when he is off the boil it notices more hence people referring to his game against MK Dons as a shocker. Hopefully he gets a decent run in the starting 11 very soon.

I don’t think anyone is disputing this. It’s more that certain players are allowed to gain confidence back in the first team and others aren’t. If this was done in a pecking order of how good they are it would make more sense.... but it isn’t.

I think that has probably been the case in the past but as far as this season goes you can't really fault Howe until now because we've been playing so well. Arguably Lerma has been given a chance ahead of players who have shown better form but that's what you get with record signings. I wasn't there yesterday but he seemed to give it away more than Surman judging by the radio (happy to be corrected by folks that were there).

Now is the time Cook should get his chance because the current two have failed. He's got a cup game to prove himself so it's down to him to play his way in. I agree that he's the better player on paper but he has to learn to control games and dictate tempo as well as add goals and more assists - if he does that he's undroppable.

He’ll get back to being a first team regular no doubt ( he is the future )a good display against Blackburn coupled with the clusterf*ck on Saturday will no doubt help his cause .
I think sometimes as fans we still can’t get our heads around the fact we have more than enough players deserving of a first team place .

Exactly. Performing well or not, thats irrelevant to you.

I’ve not really seen Cook play badly though Rob. (Admittedly I wasn’t at the ‘worst game a Bournemouth player has ever played’ MK Dons game). Saw most of his league games last year and thought he was excellent. I’ve seen Surman play a lot of insipid sideways passing slow non tackling games in the PL. I’ve also seen him play excellently a few years ago and against some poorer PL sides.

When I see Cook play a few games worse than Surmans worst I will be on here leading the campaign to return the Drew....

It’s as simple as that.

Has Surman ever really controlled a game and dictated tempo as well as adding goals and assists ? I guess he has on occasion.

I'm intrigued as to who this mystery player is that Cook has to unseat from the side because I haven't seen him. I've been pleased with Surman and Goslings application so far , credit where its due but I'm still wondering if Eddie is being overly cautious in not giving Cook a decent run out.

Surman does dictate tempo against weaker sides in my opinion. Anyway what I said was what I think Cook needs to do to get in the side - which by definition means he's better than the others if he does those things.

Cook has at times been guilty of the same issues that beset Jack Wilshere's time with us - he looks the part but isn't always as effective as you'd want. Tbf to Cook he improved last season and was well worth his place. So far this season he hasn't looked at that level from what we've seen but he will get the opportunity to prove himself in the next couple of games.

You'd think Gosling and Surman have been terrible judging by what people on here say - it's not true from what I've seen.

If anyone needs explaining why Lewis Cook should start ahead of Andrew Surman clearly hasn't been to watch a Bournemouth game in the last 2 years.
Don't forget, we went through all this 12 months ago and were right then as well.

I'm not one to overuse the "Eddie Howe knows more than us about football" argument as debate is what it's all about but he has seen a few Bournemouth games in the last couple of years and he's picked Surman ahead of Cook and also spent £25m on another midfielder in that time.

I mean, it's clearly a legitimate point of view even if you disagree. Tbh not many are disagreeing on who is the better player but rather who is better for the team on form as things stand.

Indeed, after a prolonged period on the sidelines, after a year without a break due to England commitments over the summer, Lewis Cook magically came back looking fresh and impressed almost like he had benefited from concentrating on his fitness training.

Made Eddie Howe look silly.

Big opportunity? It’s a carabao cup game, why does he have to prove himself but Surman walks into the team. He should be starting in the premier league week in week out unless injured.

Rant over

You might be right but on the flip side why should he be in the team if he can't even play well against lower league teams?

Let's just hope he smashed it tomorrow and puts all the debates to bed by deservedly winning his place back before going on to smashing it in the league.

There's almost a week until the next league game v Palace due to the scheduling. So anyone putting in a good performance tomorrow night will have a decent recovery and will be fully available for selection next Monday.

Which hopefully means we put out a strong team who are eager to put right Saturdays performance

As DJ posted earlier in the thread, Surman had 93% pass completion against Everton, Cook then came on for him and had 56% pass completion. Why are so many people here ignoring the stats that do not back Lewis Cook starting at the moment? All of us arguing this point are hoping he has a blinder on Tuesday and cements his place in the first 11, but it quite frankly isn't warranted at the moment and I just don't understand why people can't see that.

Edit: Just to add if you're going to use talent as an example, then who should we drop Mousset for? Because if it were based on talent alone he'd start every game.

did anyone else notice a bit of a spat going on at the end of the Leicester game between the 2 Cookies, as the team came down to the North stand to applaud the fans? there was a clear disagreement going on.

I do find these posts a little odd. Pretend for a minute that Lewis Cook had a poor pre-season and dropped his standards. Or isn't training particularly well. It's only hypothetical as I dont know, nor does anyone else on here though. I thought he was poor against MK Dons though, so it's perfectly possible. IF that was the case, and perhaps he was guilty (as young players often are) of believing his own hype, than wouldn't we all trust EH to manage him right and maintain the team principle which has worked so well for us. Never have so many people had such strong opinions based on so little day-to-day information.

Agree, and beat me to it...

We're all ranting on here that Eddie is somehow doing an injustice to L.Cook by leaving him on the bench... How could he do this to an U21 Capt, who won the WC and is our star player...?!?!?! Yet very few, if anyone seems to wonder if Lewis just isn't cutting it behind closed doors...The place where Eddie sees him day in day out...?

So, as BG suggests, If Lewis did have a poor pre season and hasn't been training to the same standards that Eddie expects of him, then yes, tomorrow night is a 'Big Opportunity' for him, and it's down to Lewis and no-one else to get himself in the starting XI Vs Palace.
