England Euro 2020

I like to add extra complication to anthem booing. It annoys me when we boo other anthems - disrespectful. But then I boo ours cos its so shite, and the words are cringeworthy! booooooooooo

I have this debate with a mate all the time... I actually like our National Anthem... It's short, sung with passion and you can really belt it out... What's not to like?

Some countries' Anthem's go on so long, no words, and are more like fairground tunes...

Don't understand why so many don't like it...

Me neither
"A night of unremitting tension dissolved into nonsensical fun and, having waited this long, who could really blame those trying to make sense of England enjoying luck and success at a major tournament? "
It was a review of the TV coverage, not the game itself. Self loathing? I don't think so.

Commentators and analysts don’t even try to hide their joy over England’s Euro 2020 semi-final win

"The half-hearted attempt at restraint and balance had been admirable in the circumstances but the pretence collapsed along with Raheem Sterling" - pretence implying it was a facade of restraint and balance. Also nice little dig a Sterling.

"Sterling’s tumble was largely glossed over" another dig there but also no mention of the free kick infraction or other penalty shouts.

"Criticism of English theatrics [was lacking]" hattrick of digs at Sterling. Ironically if this was the Sun doing that there'd be an article in the Guardian next day shouting racism.

"little jingoism until nerves crept in towards the end of normal time." Jinosim - the extreme belief that your own country is always best, often shown in enthusiastic support for a war against another country. I don't think anyone was suggesting invading Copenhaggen and you don't need to be a football pundit to see England dominated extra time.

In credit to the author, although he didn't bother to mention it, I felt that comments that we deserved the win because England has had to deal with a pandemic for 18 months were ridiculous. The pandemic is global.

I discovered new "fun" in earlier rounds - turn on the subtitles, and have a good old sing along to the more obscure anthems - I recommend it

I do think words can be used for other purposes than their dictionary definition. I can say I'm starving. But I'm not though you'll know what I man.

I always found booing the other countries anthem disrespectful and childish, even back in the eighties when I used to go.

Obviously, disrespecting anything to do with our country by foreigners is always wrong - see statues thread.:throw:

I hope that on Sunday we get a strong referee who will not be fooled by the rolling around clutching their faces as if they've been hit by an anti-tank shell. Also the waving of imaginary cards should get the player himself a card, it's a pet hate of mine. People like Maguire need to be careful and keep their temper under control, we don't need sendings off!

I am not surprised the commentator missed this as he was so much up himself.

As England defended their lead in the dying stages of extra-time against a weary Denmark side that had made five subs in normal time - ITV didn't spot that they had been reduced to 10 men.

Despite the hectic manner of the remaining minutes, those at home would have expected the commentary team of Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon to spot that the visitors had reduced numbers.

However, that wasn't the case, and it took around 10 minutes for viewers to be made away of the situation as England held onto the lead that Harry Kane gave them in extra time.

Having made the full allocation of five substitutions in normal time, Denmark boss brought Jannik Vestergaard off for Jonas Wind to make six - before Mathias Jensen was forced off injured.

Hence “members of staff” comment and resultant confusion

I know what you man[sic];) but it's hyperbole that exaggerates what its describing and waters down the meaning of the word.

It is one of my seemingly many pet hates because to me it's important to distinguish people who, in your example, think they need to eat and those who's bodies are shutting down from lack of nutrition.

In the same way I think it's important to distinguish between getting a little carried away about your country's sports team hitting a modern high point and attaching national pride with willingness to declare war.

I'm assuming you mean both teams.....

I think the Danes complaining about lack of substitutes when they replaced over half of their outfield team is a bit nuts.

What rung are you on?
I have allowed myself level 2.

The last 4 were teams that played all their group games at home. England travelled less distance than any nation in the competition. The European wide competition during a pandemic has been just crazy. You have a host nation, and that is it. Still, Platini made millions out of the concept.

Al it’s all in good humour; you sat there saying how amazing France were whilst their/your (can’t work out if you support England or France now) defence was leaking goals like the titanic did water and told me to eat humble pie and 20 minutes later you were out. France did less travelling in 1998 than everyone else and won it…..what’s the point?
