Derby hit with fresh transfer embargo | Jagielka leaves club

Derby County have this morning been placed under a fresh transfer embargo, after they failed to convince the EFL that they have a substantive business plan in place for the rest of the season which would guarantee they can pay their outstanding football bills, and fulfil their remaining fixtures in the Championship.

As a result, Wayne Rooney won't be able to make any new signings this month, and he actually stands to lose some players like Phil Jagielka, who has left the club with immediate effect. His contract was due to expire next week.

Sky Sports News has been told there were heated exchanges at Derby's Moor Farm training ground this morning, as the news was relayed to Rooney and his squad.

The administrators called an all-staff meeting this morning to update employees on the latest situation.

Derby's administrators have yet to approve a preferred bidder for the club, though former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley remains ready to table a £50m offer, should he be given the green light by Quantuma, who now run Derby's finances.

There's been no comment on the matter from the EFL today, but they've stressed they're still working closely with Derby to try to find solutions to their financial problems.

strange why players would walk out and heated exchanges due to embargo. must be more to it. I doubt they were under any illusions of the squad being strengthened this window.

I'd take a guess that it has something to do with their wages/contracts.

Jeez, if it's gotten to the stage whereby the administrators can't convince the FL that the club can even fulfill fixtures, that really is serious.

It might just be brinkmanship of course. Different parties trying to put wait until the last moments before pulling something together, to get the lowest price?

Rooney favourite to go back to his old club as manager to replace Benitez.
Funny - I didn’t ever care for Rooney as a player - I thought he had a big entitled attitude , as did many of that “ golden generation “ of England players who weren’t good enough yet expected everyone to fawn at their feet .

However , I have been impressed with him managing in that situation, getting Derby to play pretty good football and giving themselves a chance of avoiding relegation, off field problems not withstanding….

Apparently didn't take a (no doubt significant)wage for a while or put a fair bit back into the club to pay for things too.

Derby fans seem to think highly of him.

Not sure if I'd be overly excited if I was an Everton fan though.

Watching back videos of Rooney, Beckham and others and I think compared to the current crop they were UNDER rated.

They were very good indeed and should have been far more successful than they were with England - it was the whole attitude around the team that led to the cynicism towards them in the end …

I thought Rooney was poor for England in the final five or so years of his international career.

Not sure what it was, pressure as the main man after the others had retired? Certainly didn't see to have the impact/influence you would have hoped from a supposedly world class/near world class player.

Burnt out maybe? Seemed to get slower and slower and dropped deeper.

I know you mention England fans, but didn't help himself with that reaction on the cameras after another awful team performance in the world Cup.

The 0-0 with Algeria ! Terrible performance- it was that response which didn’t endear him to the fans , they’d gone all that way to watch England be awful again , yet he seemed to think they shouldn’t be allowed to criticise….

Cripes, the FA definitely has a hard-on for them. They must think Jeff plays for them .............

note: I would enjoy seeing them make a run at staying up .......

Seems Derby's future basically lies with 2 clubs and their threat of legal action.

Can see why Wycombe will feel cheating out of staying up but can Middlesborough really say they would have got promoted via the play-offs had Derby not pipped them to a place.

Still would have had to face 2 sides in those play-offs and beat them
