New Manager Thread

A bit premature to call him a winning guy, he's had two games, made a poor tactical change in the first game, a good one in his second.

One of the most difficult things to do is to detach your perception of a decision or performance from the result. To me all the decisions made sense and the performances were decent but then I was happy with the results!

Personally I'd like an experienced hand (not of the Dyche, Big Sam ilk) to try and get us on a good footing. I have no idea who that may be, mind!

Sorry if this comes across a bit grumpy but I hear this line so often from fans.
Who is out there that meets the criteria of being experienced at this level but not a tired carousel manager within budget?
Either you want someone picked randomly from the carousel or you want to take a risk, I don't think there is anywhere between.

Gary ONeil is my hope for a permanent manager. why change a winning guy.

He's won one game and drawn one, so it's a bit early to tell. A marked improvement on the Parker performances, but there was likely to be a 'new manager bounce' given Parker's negative tactics and lack of faith in his players.

That's not to say O'Neil wouldn't work out, but to hire a new manager based on a sample size of 2 games is a bit short-sighted. Maybe the Board have genuinely seen enough behind the scenes over the past year or 2 to say that the guy who happened to be coach when Parker was sacked also happens to be the best option out there, but it all feels a bit too convenient.

The issues around our squad's strength in depth remain. We should only hire him if we believe he'd be the right man in the championship should we go down, not just based on an excellent 2nd half vs Forest.

Having said all that, if it comes down to O'Neil or Dyche, I'll take O'Neil.

We shouldn’t be comparing O’Neill to Allardyce or Dyche who would be poor choices not in keeping with our traditions or style.

We should be comparing O’Neill to the best young talents across Europe and the UK.

If we appoint O’Neill it will be the third time in two years that a worldwide search for a manager has concluded that the best candidate already resides on our training ground. Like others have said this is a hell of a coincidence.

The other two lasted six months each.

Give GON a couple more games and then see how we feel about him. I think this forum, with all of its experts, should appoint the next Head Coach as clearly the board have no idea what to do! ;)

Not coming across grumpy at all, it's a perfectly valid point. I'd like to see us bring someone in that has top flight experience (not necessarily in the premier League) with an attacking ethos. I'm not an expert so don't have names. I worry about us giving the job to an untried candidate again. If you were managing a multimillion pound organisation, you wouldn't promote a junior manager to CEO. Different world and a lazy scenario for me to use, but I think it works.

I also agree that I'm happy with the results - only saw the Wolves game on telly, but we could, and possibly should, have lost the game. The tactical shift to 3 at the back really have Wolves the impetus to get at us. Only saw the first half of the Forest game but see the change worked an absolute treat.

I like O'Neill, but would rather we looked outside.

Added problem finding the right fit for our club outside the ‘also rans’ on the various managers merry go round and within the club, Brighton are also looking for that person.

would it be unreasonable for the best young talent across Europe, as you put it, to actually apply for the position?

It doesn’t normally work like that… we won’t have put it on Indeed. We would identify them and then ask permission to speak to them, like Chelsea did with Potter and like Brighton did to Swansea to get Potter etc…

Well we haven't heard anything have we?
Surely the players want to know who there next manager will be .. not just us fans .
I'm happy with O'Neil if it's him , but I'll support whoever the board decide to take on. But would be nice to get a update .. as in they have spoken to various candidates etc..
Maybe it's just me who would like a update then.
Why? Its not going to make a difference.

but as you keep saying its such a prestigious job all up-and-coming coaches would be chewing their agents ear off to get their cv in front of blake ad hughes

naive to buy the permission to speak nonsense
