Charlie Daniels

Chelsea picked us for Ake because we said we would utilise him in a defensive midfield position and only as emergency defence cover. Eddie is a man of his word and I don't think he sees him as left back cover, particularly having spent what he did on Brad Smith.

Ake could play instead of Surman though, which I would like to see given a go to add a bit of athleticism in midfield and extra height in both boxes at set pieces...

Daniels is an outstanding player who is having a rough patch. A managers job is to know which players are better for being dropped and come back fighting and which players need to play their way back into form. We should trust Eddies judgement on this - I do.

Hull at home is a game in which we'll likely have more time on the front foot than the back.

As such, I'd like to give Daniels a starting place against Hull, to show his attacking strengths and show some better form.

Spurs coming up is a game I'd far rather have the more solid Ake in there. That's the threat to Daniels. If Daniels continues to be poor this Saturday, then Ake is in for Spurs and the foreseeable.

100% agree. Daniels was amazing last season, not sure what has happened to him so far this season, maybe (and its not his fault) the speculation over playing for England had an affect.

Ake over Smith any day of the week.

How about the words "rested " or "squad rotation " sounds better than dropped .
Or should such and such a player be given a chance ?Sounds more positive .

I meant no disrespect to Charlie but saying "squad rotation" or "rested" implies whoever steps in couldn't take his place if they perform well, which wasn't what I had in mind.

You're right though, I should have framed it better by titling the thread "should Ake or B. Smith be given a chance?"

Wasn't being a critic of your title mate , just seems some posters seem a bit defensive when there's any talk of players being dropped .Like it's an announcement they're sh*t of something .

Ah I see. Yea that's true, It's not like we don't have good depth coming off the bench this year (unlike last year.)

There have been one or two of our players recently talking about our defenders being given a chance to be in the England squad.

Our own fans on this MB have questioned some of our defensive qualities and that Eddie should have signed a good central defender.

So wouldn't it be better for our players to concentrate on getting our defence solid first, before worrying about not being picked for the England squad?

Have either Ake or Brad Smith shown they deserve a chance? Have they gone away on international duty and really impressed? Have they taken their chances in front of Howe on the pitch or on the training ground?

Some people may believe that Daniels has dropped from his very own high standards, but has he dropped below a standard that either Brad Smith or Ake has shown in that position?

Against Everton I thought Daniels and Ibe had really started to show a good understanding and partnership. How would dropping Daniels affect Ibe who is slowly but surely improving?

Totally agree DJ. The one thing we know about the dynamic way we use fullbacks is they are very reliant on the partnership with who is in front of them. That telepathy Daniels had with Pugh and Francis had with Ritchie was rarely replicated when not together. Smith and Ritchie were poor together because they both like to cut in. Similarly Daniels loves a one two but Ibe is not a confident first time passer so likes to stop then dribble at his opponent. Count the times Daniels has made a run this year and not got the ball. These things take time and it's a lot more complicated than assuming Daniels has dropped form.

I'd argue that an entire season in the Premier League starting in the bottom half's best defence by miles last season, does indeed show that Ake deserves a chance.

Maybe not tomorrow as I've said, because we'll need the best of our attacking partnerships to break Hull down. But there's going to be other times when we'll prefer defensive solidity first off, and Ake will do that better than Daniels <is currently>. Although I do hope Daniels can start playing himself into form of course.

Chelsea may want him playing centrally in front of the back 4, and yeah I'd like to see him there a bit also at some point. But his CV suggests he can be a fine and reliable LB if we remain concerned about Daniels' form and defensive frailty.

As for Brad Smith, I remain hugely skeptical about that signing..but that's another story!!

To answer the question directly:

No, Daniels should not be dropped for the game against Hull.

Daniels has not started this season with the same level of form he sustained throughout last season.

However, neither Brad Smith nor Nathan Ake are anywhere near as good as an out-of-form Charlie Daniels.
In fact, so far this season, both of those players have done more to prove that they are not worthy of a starting place than they have otherwise.

I suspect we will not see either of them play until the FA cup starts again.

If neither Brad Smith or Nathan Ake are anywhere as good as an out of form Daniels it does make you wonder why they were signed, its a pretty damning indictment imho.

Agree with Dawson though Daniels + Pugh = Good good combo.

It's a tough question, he seemed to play fairly well against Everton but he has also made several glaring errors this season which have lead directly to goals being conceded. At some point, every player surely has a point where it's kinder to take them out of the spotlight? Charlie is very close to that in my opinion.

I don't know if it's been mentioned already but Kris Temple just tweeted that he saw Brad Smith walking round in a protective boot so there's obviously something up with him.

I would also say no. Although the OP made a fair point, Daniels, arguably our best player last season, has made an average start to this campaign considering his ability. I'm sure this goal will give a huge boost
