Saudi League

#latecapitalism

I think this just shears off football supporters into two camps: the sad gits who spend most matches scrolling through the Instagram accounts of their favourite players and the rest of us who value what it means for their local club to be embedded in the local community and the sense of place that comes from it.

I agree. I don’t follow any players and don’t care what they get up to outside of game day ( nothing sordid or illegal ). I like seeing it when AFCB does something for local hospitals or charities etc.

99% of players chase the money, so nothing new, and I'm not bothered if they leg it to Saudi or not. If the money train only lasts a few years, then this generation of players benefit, good luck to them. If Mbappe loses some sharpness and doesnt play so well for France as a result, then better for England if we meet in next tournament
We cant complain, best players used to go to Italy, currently its the Premier League with the money all bar a few teams dotted around Europe. Me going to Dean Court has nothing to do with whether the worlds best play for the opposition or not, it would be more of a level playing field if they didnt (though acknowledging it is 'entertaining' to see players like De Bruyne in the flesh) .

Being reported that Mbappe is not interested in meeting representatives from the Saudi club.

Premier League for one season?

Psg will lose some serious money if he doesn't go to Saudi. Not sure what a 1 year loan deal would cost but not £250m. Real Madrid will wait a year

Anyone who thinks that the Saudi League is a flash in the pan or the football equivalent of a one-hit-wonder should get hold of a copy of the August edition of World Soccer and read the articles on it by John Duerden and Keir Radnedge. Reading that might change your mind. This League has been a long time in the planning and making and is backed by the sort of money that even our TV revenue funded Premier League can't match.
Their national team has appeared in six World Cup Finals since their debut in one in 1994. There is a well established football culture in the country unlike some of the other countries who have unsuccessfully tried the same trick in the past.

Neymar off to the Saudi league then. PSG getting £86m as a transfer fee. Neymar himself getting a £129m a year for two years contract.

This is the same club who wanted Mbappe but got turned down, so they've got Neymar instead!

It will be an interesting leveller for the major European leagues this. Especially as they up their intent to sign current stars and not just veterans

As a football fans it might not be the best news but as a Bournemouth fan it’s potentially good news.

They won’t be plundering us. They want box office. Every top club that loses a box office player or two brings them down a peg. Yes they can go out and sign with their cash but they won’t get an instant fix and they will pay over the odds as the money trickles through the game.

Just trying to see the positives!

Trouble is ND that transfer fees and wages for every player goes up. Sure the Saudis won't be chasing our players but it has a knock on effect all the way down as the Man cities, chelseas, MU, Liverpool etc have to replace players or compete to keep their players.

Agree. Maybe Sky will bugger off too.

Yes but if they are buying our players….. why can’t Kerkez become one in two years time?

Neymar is 31 and definitely on the decline. I haven't seen a player sold that a club hasn't wanted off the books yet.

No reason why not, my point is that fees and wages will always go up for all when another big player (country) enters town. The Chinese tried to financially muscle there way in but largely failed a couple of years or so ago. The Saudis may succeed where they failed - £100m transfers will become the norm within a couple of years if they succeed.

And clubs will still be in debt

Think Neves was a decent signing though and Henderson was still valuable for liverpool
Neves is the one the CEO of that league saw as a breakthrough. An international at their peak wanted by Barcelona. Read an article at the weekend about him. Interesting system as well as he is signing players on behalf of the league. Slight variant on the US draft system.
