AFCB Go To North London Full Of Confidence

After a good performance against Fulham on Boxing Day at Dean Court, our players are playing full of confidence and also seemed to have really gelled as a team. Someone drops out because of injury and the person who comes in as a replacement fits straight into that spot. We saw against Fulham how Alex Scott fitted into the role that Lewis Cook usually has playing alongside Ryan Christie. For his second game as a left back, Dango Ouattara had a great game and our manager has found a player normally used to playing as a winger, who now looks a natural left back and against Fulham, gave a MOM performance.

The Cherries next game is a visit on Sunday to North London to play Spurs at 2 pm. This will be a real test to see how far our side has come as Spurs seemed to have found their form again after a recent run of poor results, including four defeats and a draw. Winning their last three games, two at home, but came unstuck at Brighton on Thursday night losing 4-2. This will be the last game of the year and the half way stage of the season. Can our side come away with the points like last season?

At home since our game earlier at Dean Court, Spurs have beaten both Sheffield United and Liverpool 2-1, Fulham 2-0, their biggest home win so far, 4-1 against Newcastle United and Everton 2-1. They lost to Chelsea 1-4, both 1-2 against Aston Villa and West Ham. Away from home, they won against AFCB, Burnley (biggest win so far), Luton Town, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. They have drawn with Arsenal, Manchester City and lost to Wolves and Brighton.

The last time our side played Spurs away, was back in April and it was our first ever victory on their soil. Son opened the scoring for the home side, but Matias Vina equalised before half-time. Dominic Solanke put the Cherries into the lead six minutes after the break. Arnaut Danjuma our former player, who came on as a substitute equalised with two minutes of normal time, but Dango Ouattara scored a great winning goal in injury time, to make the score 2-3 and AFCB went home smiling with all three points in the bag.

In our away games against Spurs, AFCB have W 1, D 0, L 5.
All competitions, AFCB have W 3, D 2, L 9.

Spurs Team News
They have a number of injuries, James Maddison, Micky Van den Ven, James Solomon, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Rodrigo Bentancur and Alfie Whiteman. Their latest injury is Christian Romero. Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski are suspended.

Spurs Player To Watch
Son Hueng Min has done a good job of filling the gap left by Harry Kane. Son has already scored 11 goals and has 4 assists. The other player is Richarlison, who has hit form and has scored 4 goals in his last four games. Pedro Porro has had 4 assists in his last 8 games.

AFCB Team News
No reports of any new injuries or players returning.

AFCB Player To Watch
Dominic Solanke has scored 8 goals in his last seven games, which includes a penalty. Dango Ouattara who has had two good games in his left back role, will possibly face Brennan Johnson, this will be another good test for our left back.

The Referee
John Brooks will be taking his third game involving AFCB this season when we play Spurs. The other two games were away at Brighton and home against Liverpool in the League Cup.

After watching Brighton vs Tottenham tonight, there was so much space behind the spurs back line. Senesi with a few balls over the top to Dom could be magical on Sunday. Also spurs playing out from the back they had no confidence - Our high press could cause them trouble.

Those last few minutes and then nine minutes of added time, Spurs seem to get a new lease of life and could have scored more.

It should be a good game on Sunday, plus Son’s last game before he leaves to play for his Country.

Richarlison is a dangerous adversary for us.

Starting to hit a bit of form.

Need to nullify his threat, as he clearly tries to break the lines.

He was getting very frustrated last night. I was watching with no commentary but it seemed to me he was substituted before he picked up a second yellow.

Big Ange claiming that Spur's loss was due to tiredness. This is good news for us with our additional recovery time.

This is a great time to play them, they have:

-Both first choice centre backs out injured.
-A key midfielder in Bissouma suspended.
-Both of their chief creators in Madison and Kulusevski unavailable.
-They will only have a three day break between games.

Not saying we should expect to win, because they still have a lot of attacking talent. But we certainly have a chance here.

I do hope you are right. It may be a good time to play them. However, haven't Spurs won their last three games?

I’ve looked at the last 4 league games for Spurs. These were two home games (Newcastle and Everton) and away at N Forest and Brighton. Spurs gained 9 points although the XGs suggested it should be lower with both the Forest and Everton games being tight affairs. Spurs have scored 10 goals and conceded 6 with xG estimating 9.21 goals with 8.40 conceded.

Goals xG.png

Spurs have had 6 different goal scorers with Richarlison getting 4, Son 3 and 4 players with 1 each. Son has 3 assists and Pedro Porro 2, with 2 players with one each.

The average positions of the starting line-ups are below. What catches my eye is that Spurs regularly play with Son high on the left and Johnson high on the right, with no traditional centre forward. Johnson will certainly give Ouattara a test if he is still required as a full back.

The following graph compares summary stats of Spurs and AFCB over the last 4 games. Both teams have scored 10 or more goals, although Spurs have had the better chances. An area that stands out is big chances conceded with Spurs conceding 15 and AFCB 3.

Comparison.png

Spurs have had a great percentage possession over the last 4 games. They have created a relatively large proportion of chances from open play (about 7 from 8). Chances conceded from open play is roughly similar.

And while we are on the New Years thanks list, really appreciated your fascinating analysis this year Matt.

Been reading the spurs forum..they’re predicting a win for us!!!!
Never thought I would see comments like those from a forum of a team playing at home in front of 60,000 + and that team being Spurs who are in the top 6.

Then you get this.

It’s f’in Bournemouth at home lads. They’ve played almost nothing but the bottom half and the decimated Barcodes during their run. Depleted squad or not - we should be winning this.

And WTF is wrong with the scheduling in this bent league. We have to go Thursday night to Sunday. Meanwhile Bournemouth played on Tuesday. Liverpool goes Tuesday to Tuesday.
