Lloyd Kelly

It’s not about persuading people to stay. That will always be a tough ask for us with top talent. It’s about realising value for them if they Trent staying.

With any decent players you offer them a contract extension 24 to 18 months out and if they don’t accept it you sell them. With Kelly and Lerma we let 60m worth of player walk out the door for nothing. Just poor asset management.
clubs have to actually come in for these players though, apart from a late bid for Kelly has anyone come in with a offer during his time here? if Kelly reached his potential here then he would of been snapped up before this point, his career here has been stop start when in PL but in the championship his playing time was good
with lerma I think the club thought he was worth more to us staying and getting back to PL then selling in the championship.

Im not worried about relegation. I just like to enjoy watching good football and not sure I get that with Dango at left back as opposed to an orthodox left back.
Tbf on the couple of times we've seen Dango at LB we've produced some of our best football of the season......... He may be the sort of winger that gets you off your seat and then immediately sits you back down again but he has massive potential as a full back..

All about opinions but think he looked like a fish out of water but we just got excited every time he made a tackle. Not saying he couldn’t become a fullback but I’d be surprised. Been surprised before though…

He was easily our best player against Fulham Imo and was superb against Spurs before he went off ......I still think we would have got something out of that game had he not got injured........ Certainly don't think anyone else saw him as a fish out of water anyway ..........if we had paid that money for a left back and he produced those performances I would have said well done Richard Hughes.

I mean did you really watch the Fulham game and think he didn't play well?

I think he looked like a winger playing at fullback against a Fulham team without a winger. Had Willian been fit think he would have had a more challenging afternoon.

He did alright.

Willian plays on the left so he probably wouldn't have..........A top class winger will cause any full back problems but one thing they don't want is to face a full back who"s quicker than them.

I agree with Neil on this one... Dango did a job and we all got excited as no one expected anything from him, and he actually looked ok out there... Made some decent challenges and got the crowd going... But wouldn't start looking at him to do a job in there on a more regular occurrence
If we had signed him as a LB in January and Fulham was his first game would you not be encouraged by what you saw?
He wouldn't be the first player to look better in a different position.....look at Ryan Christie.

OK, so if you looked at it like that then I'd think 'ok, he's done alright there...'

I'll give you that one... :)

But we all know Dango is too inconsistent to play in defence... Mistakes become costly...

Has Dango made many defensive mistakes? His mistakes are usually in the attacking third when he tries something that doesn't come off.
This is my point... Playing as a defender requires a very different mindset to an attacking player, where mistakes are not as costly... I'm not saying he couldn't be a FB, but I think it would take a large mental shift...

Following the Charlie Daniels positional change. Not exactly incompatible - hence tav played wingback a lot

Perhaps a bit simplistic. The club can't force a player to be sold or got rid of (see the Harry Arter thread) and even if there is a buyer they may bid so low that it isn't worth the club selling compared to the performance they anticipate getting from him. There's plenty of complications within these deals. For all we know, Lerma didn't want to move until the end of the last season as he didn't want to disrupt his kid's education year. We just don't know.

But he's done plenty of defending in the games he's played without making many (any?) defensive mistakes. Perhaps this shows he's not error prone he just tries riskier things in the final third.

One and a half matches, let's not rush to any judgements, we might trip ourselves up. : )

For what it's worth, I think Dango's got a lot of talent and a manager that will get the best out of him (I hope) : )

I'm prepared to wait and see whether the club/Hughes/Bill Foley made a mistake or WE signed a "cracking player" : )

FFP means that a player like Kelly is available for a free, you ha e to go for him. I presume you could even spread his signing on fee over a couple of seasons. It's the new reality.
Let's hope we are across a lot of players' contracts from other clubs with the ability to pick them up for free.
