A338 this weekend

Hi I'm an exile that travels to the ground from the Portsmouth direction. With the game coming up this Saturday should I add more time or divert? I have seen some very scary local TV news that suggests 1 to 2 hour delays on this road. Is this sensationalism or should I redirect through Burley/Bransgore/over the the top of the A338 to the Hurn road? Perhaps the delays are restricted to commute times? Thanks for any experiences or advice.

They put the road back to normal last weekend, hoping it will be the same this weekend.

There was also talk on the radio this morning of some of the work now being done at night, think Dorset CC had a meeting yesterday to discuss it.

Also came down it Saturday and last 2 days at peak time, Saturday was fine maybe only a 2 minute delay. Yesterday and today was about a 10-15 min delay at 17:45. They've now moved the single lane merging to after Blackwater Junction which has made it so much better as you don't have Blackwater merging into the already single lane, there's just a bit more time for drivers to sort it out so it flows much better.

Best check beforehand on Google Maps with traffic display switched on, you'll pretty quickly see if there are traffic delays around that junction.
I'd allow extra time anyway. Hopefully will be fine.

So the word is that the A338 will be running almost normally on Saturday - is that correct? The club just sent me an email saying expect long delays when travelling to the game!

I had the pleasure of driving down the 338 again today.
Joined at the top around 4.30pm, only about a 10 minute delay.
I would think Saturday around lunchtime would be less, even with the Harry Kane closure in place.
Sorry about that. :oops::oops:

Update. It also mentions football traffic on October 1st.

Today the A338 lane closure will be removed overnight, with two lanes back in action by 6am tomorrow morning.

For two weeks this section of road will be mostly free from traffic management with preparation work continuing away from the flow of traffic.

There will be some off-peak daytime lane closures for material deliveries and associated work.

On Sunday 30 September, three nights of northbound and southbound road closures are planned for temporary steel barriers to be installed.

The road will be closed between the A31 at Ashley Heath and the Cooper Dean roundabout from 10pm to 6am the following morning on Sunday and Tuesday.

On Monday 1 October the closures will start later to allow football supporters to travel to and from the match.

Daytime work will involve bridge works to join together the two bridges that carry the road over the River Stour, and make extensive repairs to these bridges. Night time work will mainly be earthworks to widen the southbound carriageway into the central reservation.

For those coming across to Sandbanks.

Ferry Service suspended
The Sandbanks to Shell Bay Ferry Service is currently suspended. We withdrew the ferry from service on Wednesday morning when we suffered a main hydraulic drive motor failure. This was replaced with a new one within 10 hours, but unfortunately, has then been succeeded by a succession of mechanical issues; none of which could have been predicted; some of which are extremely time consuming & costly to address, namely the changing of the drive motor, a blocked radiator, which, has meant we have had to pipe in the spare engine to take over. We have been pulling in help from specialist Contractors from all-over the Country who have responded immediately with assistance, for which we would like to thank them. Repairs are still ongoing. However, our maintenance staff have been working long hours for the past three days, and therefore for Health & Safety reasons to provide our staff with a reasonable rest period, we have had to suspend service over the weekend and into Monday. We are hoping that repairs will be completed by Monday, following which we will require sufficient time to test all the repairs we have had to make. We therefore hope to be able to resume the service at some point during the middle of next week. We sincerely apologise to all our valued customers for this inconvenience, but can only assure you that we are working as hard as we can to return the ferry to service as soon as possible.

Tinpot.

At least it'll keep some of you buggers off Purbeck for a while.

Keep in mind all that this weekend is student arrivals weekend for the university, the Lansdowne area where all the digs are will be absolutely rammed with mummies and daddies dropping off their 18 year old darlings together with a car load full of supplies. The majority arrive tomorrow the Saturday (gotta get that first nights boozing in). This will add several hundreds if not thousands of extra cars to the A338 tomorrow.

Not sure if it was last season or one before, but my wife phoned me to say she couldn’t get out of the ASDA car park because of a mass traffic jam.

I walked down from the ground and met her there.

Whenever I come home, we always go for a walk in the Purbecks,
Kingston has a great walk.
