If that's the career path, there's nothing wrong with that. As a team in the top tier, it's almost our responsibility to produce some youngsters that can help teams further down.
As an AFCB fan, you should know, recognise and respect that. What would we have done without Matt Holland, Warren Cummings, Jason Pearce etc?
What I object to is holding on to the players for too long. I think Jack Simpson's career was messed around by sitting in our dev team and on the bench until he was 24. That was wrong.
If there isn't clear indication they have a significant chance of breaking into the first team squad by the time they are 22, we should let them go and build a career elsewhere rather than forcing them into a nomad-like loan existence, at best. Note that doesn't mean they have to be a part of the first team squad at 22, but simply that we deem it very likely by then that they will make the step up.
Gavin Kilkenny is one. A very talented footballer but immediately pushed out of contention by L Cook last season and now we have even more options for that position. Unless we get relegated, we really should let him find a team he can call home and build a career at. He may come back up in a couple years with another team or via a transfer, but better that than watch him end up like Phillips at Liverpool.
So it's great that 19 year old Dominic Sadi has signed an extended deal with us. I hope he gets some loans and some experience of first team football in the EFL. If he does well, I hope he then breaks into our squad. In a few years, if he looks good but not ready for the PL, I hope we let him help out a club a forge a place for himself in the pro ranks.
