Non - Brexit

How much does Jersey pay into the UK defence budget ?

Polling day and the gun boats make headlines in the moaning daily mail. Can you fool enough of the people enough of the time?

We often have the negative impacts of brexit posted here and people asking "where is the brexit bonus?" so it's only fair to post some of the positive impacts. I should add that I am absolutely not suggesting that fewer foreigners is a positive thing but as someone who is concerned about the wages and the cost of living for lower paid workers I do see these things as positive.

Rental markets have been hit, reducing upward pressure on rents, particularly in London.

Reduced pressure on public services.

Wage increases in hospitality

https://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2021/04/30/hospitality-wage-war-amid-brexit-and-covid-challenges/

Just so I am clear, are the wages going up for all the hospitality staff currently furloughed or only the ones who have lost their jobs? Hotels are still closed as are 80% or restuarants....

Wages are going up in all industries where there are staff shortages. We'll have to see how it pans out as things open up but I think you'll see industry wide wage increases this year in hospitality as we have across all industries that have shortages of labour.

I never really understood why people tried to argue that EU Labour didn't surpress wages in lower skilled professions. As if demand and supply doesn't apply in the labour market.

No different in the US where Mexican migrants (legal and illegal) have kept wages low in low skilled jobs. Supply and demand as you say.

It's a very good piece Rob.

Of course there are two sides to the story and I fully understand there will always be some who campaign for rejoin.

There is probably a position to be carved out whereby a party could be generally pro-Europe and seek to build closer ties, without necessarily going full on rejoin. That would be a more electorally sustainable position, and seems to be what Starmer is aiming at (https://www.politico.eu/article/how-keir-starmer-plans-to-make-labour-great-again/). Starmer's prominent role in 'Peoples Vote' hinders him making that position look authenticate though, but it could come in time, or someone else could certainly do it.

That aside, Labour could do a lot of good in holding the government to account on their 'leveling up' (as touched upon in the Guardian) and generally fighting for these towns, who are gradually turning blue as Labour ignores them. There will be chances to win back their support, when the Tories inevitably don't fully deliver, through their own issues.

It would mean Labour pivoting away somewhat from the metro liberals though, with all they entail.

Labour could recapture old territory in the towns, but the answer isn't quite the Momentum lot, and it isn't quite neo-liberalisim either. They need to reincarnate Clement Attlee! He would make Boris concerned.

War with France. Glad you’re happy.

I’ll confess, I do not know much about all of this, so I could well be wrong, but as far as I can tell, the dissolved Jersey govt offered French fisherman with a history of fishing in those waters the opportunity to carry on fishing. Extra paperwork, but not stopping those who have fished there continuing.

French fisherman are now protesting and blockading, whilst the French govt are potentially threatening to cut off the electric to the island, presumably preventing some from possibly, eating warm food, heating and washing.

So who is at fault?

Boris Johnson has a Clear, or not, Plan..to Confuse those here and abroad...move into spaces like an attacking midfielder...he won't always score...but its a poachers lot!

I thought this guy Starmer, being a Lawyer and a Sir to boot..would carve up Boris in a swift and brutal , almost cruel onslaught...but Nothing...no Plan.... or communication of any sort with potential shifters from Blue Allegience....bugger all about what we want to know.. .' What are you going to do to radically bring some stability to Post- Pandemic and Post- Brexit Britain ?'
We don't need a running commentary on Boris's inadequacies..we bloody well know those as far as our eyes and ears can take us....we want to know what Labour in its 2021 form....is going to DO if it gets the reigns ?..If they don't tell us....its stick with Green or follow the Pied Piper that is Boris!
