Almost three-quarters of under-50s hospitalised with Delta were unvaccinated - PHE

Public Health England (PHE) data shows 9,472 people had been admitted to hospital in England up to 29 August who were either confirmed or likely to have the Delta COVID variant.

The figures show 5,098 of them were under the age of 50 while 4,374 were aged 50 or over.

Of the under-50s, 3,742 (73%) were unvaccinated, while 724 (14%) had received one vaccine dose and 521 (10%) had received both doses.

And of the 4,374 aged 50 or over, 1,322 (30%) were unvaccinated, 372 (9%) had received one jab while 2,651 (61%) were fully vaccinated.

As with the figures for Delta deaths, PHE said a small number of virus samples from people admitted to hospital could not be matched with vaccination records.

Nearly two-thirds of over-50 Delta deaths in England were double-jabbed - PHE

Figures show that 1,798 deaths occurred in England up to 29 August of people who were either confirmed or likely to have had the Delta variant

My 15 yr old Grand-daughter has to go to school for a Covid test the day before term starts. There are going to be hundreds of kids milling around waiting for these tests. Surely it would make more sense to do small groups throughout the day to minimise the risk? School doesn't seem to think things through sometimes.

I think schools are under enormous pressure, bubbles have gone and should a parent contract it the child should still attend school now despite being a close contact. You’re right though they could spread it over a day or two.

This return to school will be like no other due to the level of community infection never before seen, whilst bubbles popped and a return to packed buses shipping them all in and out and other mitigation’s abandoned.

We will see more spread between the children than ever before, it’s just how the percentages play out. Infected kids will attend after catching it from their own parents and now the govt are playing their “let it rip” strategy there doesn’t seem to be any other options.

Schools will get the blame for the “next wave” ignoring the reasons why.

Have they changed the rules on school closures and isolation? Otherwise they'll all be shut anyway.

Under 18’s do not have to isolate unless they have symptoms and test positive.

There are some other bits of “guidance” but it basically amounts to being thrown to the Wolves.

What do you suggest? Vaccines for all schoolchildren? Mass testing daily? Close schools until Covid has gone away?

Yes, having spent 9 months moaning that schools should never have been closed I’m now advocating closing them until covid has “gone away”… I’ve already said that there are no other real options available under the current circumstances.

No decision has been made on whether to offer coronavirus jabs to all 12 to 15-year-olds, the vaccines minister has told Sky News.

Speaking to Trevor Phillips On Sunday, Nadhim Zahawi said parents of children in this age group will need to give their consent if a rollout takes place.

He also confirmed that vaccine passports will be introduced for large venues - and it is hoped this will prevent further closures this winter.

Breaking news ? .....as reported in most newspapers on Saturday ;)

Have they?

"If you look at what the FA (Football Association) have done, they've done so brilliantly in terms of checking vaccine status to reopen football.

"That is the sort of right thing to do and we are absolutely on track to continue to make sure that we do that.

The test events for the Euro’s Billy.

I was thinking more re football now and going forward into the winter.

They have talked about it Dave, but have not heard anymore since.

The decision was going to be made at the end of September after everyone had a chance of getting the jab.
