Odd Three Out

Remember being on the pitch at Tranmere celebrating being champions and just waiting for Brentford to score the penalty.................................................
Gutted but I always believe we got payback by winning the champ title at Charlton in injury time

Despite this afternoon, it’s getting closer

For those of you who are table watchers (that is keen observers of league tables as opposed to Table watchers who spot brightly-coloured shirts) there are four matches left and 12 points each to play for (Chelsea have a match in hand). Can we finish above Chelsea? How soon can we be assured of safety? Who is going down with the scummers?

The three teams closest to us were all in action today plus Big Sam’sLeeds whose turn it was to face the steamroller that is Manchester City. The whites (narrow) defeat means that their only chance to catch us is to win all three remaining matches and for us to lose all three and then it would only be on goal difference.

In the West Mids derby, Wolves resisted Villa’s great run and moved a place above us. Tottenham recovered from their recent terrible spell and manged to beat Palace to keep our chance of surpassing them real, especially if we don’t lose next Saturday at Selhurst Park

Meanwhile, on the south coast, FrankLampard’sChelsea, in five minutes, did us in, not to mention the part played by VAR (again).

So, nearly there although still not “mathematically” safe.

Tonight, the bottom half of the table looks like this:

Pos Team Played GD Pts Max PTS (bold)

11 Chelsea 34 -05 42 54
12 Palace 35 -11 40 49
13 Wolves 35 -20 40 49
14 Boscombe 35 -30 39 48

15 West Ham 34 -13 34 46
16 Leicester 34 -13 30 42
17 Leeds 35 -25 30 39
18 Florist 34 -32 30 42
19 Everton 34 -25 29 41

Update after Moyes’West Ham entertain the other Mancs club tomorrow. Also after DeanSmith’sLeicester visit Fulham, SeanDyche’sEverton are guests at Brighton and SteveCooper’sFlorist and WhoCares’Scummers clash the day after tomorrow. There could be cheers and tears come 10pm on Monday night.

A minor update. The positions couldn’t change because West Ham were five points behind us at the start of play. A goalkeeping error gifted the Hammers the win to narrow the gap to us to two points and add emphasis to the ‘any two from four plus Southampton going down’ scenario. Let us hope that United are as generous to us on Saturday week. Or maybe David de Gea put a huge wedge on Brighton qualifying for Europe.

We cannot be safe tonight, although bad results for two of Everton, Florist or Leicester will guarantee PL football next season for Chelsea, Palace and Wolves which may put Palace in place some place on the beach on Saturday.

This morning, the bottom half of the table looks like this:

Pos Team Played GD Pts Max PTS (bold)

11 Chelsea 34 -05 42 54
12 Palace 35 -11 40 49
13 Wolves 35 -20 40 49

Update(s) today with four of the bottom five in action as follows:

15.00 Fulham vs. Leicester
17.30 Brighton vs. Everton
20.00 Florist vs. Scummers

Coronation Bank Holiday update #1

A minor update. The only change is that Leicester, leaving their fightback at Fulham rather too late, can now only catch us on goal difference IF they win all their final three and we fail to get another point. Can Leicester win against Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham? Surely, that is unlikely.

The bottom half of the table is:

Pos Team Played GD Pts Max PTS (bold)
11 Chelsea 34 -05 42 54
12 Palace 35 -11 40 49
13 Wolves 35 -20 40 49
14 Boscombe 35 -30 39 48

15 West Ham 35 -12 37 46
16 Leicester 35 -15 30 39
17 Leeds 35 -25 30 39
18 Florist 34 -32 30 42
19 Everton 34 -25 29 41
20 Scummers 34 -32 24 36

Everton at Brighton next. Update afterwards.

Coronation Bank Holiday update #2

A rather less minor update. Everton got their fightback in first leaving the seagulls grounded. The win moves them up from 19th to 16th with Leicester, Leeds and Florist all shuffling down one place. Their goal difference column was eased too. Everton could still finish above us although, as they entertain Man City next, that possibility may evaporate. Their final two matches are Wolves and us.

The bottom half of the table thus far tonight:

Pos Team Played GD Pts Max PTS (bold)

11 Chelsea 34 -05 42 54
12 Palace 35 -11 40 49
13 Wolves 35 -20 40 49
14 Boscombe 35 -30 39 48

15 West Ham 35 -12 37 46
16 Everton 35 -21 32 41
17 Leicester 35 -15 30 39
18 Leeds 35 -25 30 39
19 Florist 34 -32 30 42
20 Scummers 34 -32 24 36

E&OE

Everton’s win against Brighton shows just how close things are at the bottom. A win for any side provides fresh hope. That leads nicely on to Florist vs. Scummers. Update afterwards.

Coronation Bank Holiday update #3

Southampton did not go quietly, although the defeat leaves them eight points behind in the relegation stakes with only nine left to play for against Fulham, Brighton and Liverpool. The outlook 'down the road' is looking bleak.

Florist won by the odd goal in seven and they emulated Everton from earlier in the evening. The win moved them up from 19th to 16th with Everton, Leicester and Leeds doing the one place downward shuffle. Florist could still finish above us but with six points to make up and Chelsea, Arsenal and Palace left to play, that is no easy task.

The Leicester defeat means that the fear of relegation is now removed from the doors of Palace and Wolves. The mini-league of nine is now a micro-league of seven that will shrink further.

The bottom half of the table as people head to their beds tonight is:

Pos Team Played GD Pts Max PTS (bold)

11 Chelsea 34 -05 42 54
12 Palace 35 -11 40 49
13 Wolves 35 -20 40 49
14 Boscombe 35 -30 39 48

15 West Ham 35 -12 37 46
16 Florist 35 -31 33 42
17 Everton 35 -21 32 41
18 Leicester 35 -15 30 39
19 Leeds 35 -25 30 39
20 Scummers 35 -33 24 33

E&OE

Although the days results did not affirm “safety,” the maximum points available to Leicester and Leeds and the upcoming difficult fixtures for Everton and Florist point towards a waiting game. Any failure to win by Leicester and Leeds or a single point gained by us will be enough as the bottom five are simply running out of matches.

Updates next weekend on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Wouldn't it be great to report on one of those days that we certainly won't be part of the odd three out?

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

The answer to that is another question. If we are oh-so-very close, why is it taking so bloody long to get there?

One reason is that a dismal, disappointing, dull performance yesterday left us all deflated. Before I get drunk on alliteration, there is some good news.

Man U found a bit of backbone to keep Wolves within our sights and, despite yesterday afternoon, we maintain 14th position in the league table.

Majorly, though, Leeds not winning at home to Newcastle leaves them unable to catch us [that was well worth underlining, wasn’t it?] and therefore we cannot finish in the bottom two.

Scummers relegation worthy of a bit of a cheer but wasn't it really rather a bit of an anti-climax?

So, what’s to come? If Everton fail against Man City today, they cannot reach our points total and the mathematical certainty (which on non-football forums is referred to simply as a certainty) is confirmed (and a certainty doesn’t need to be confirmed because it is, well, a certainty). Otherwise, it rolls over until tomorrow night with Leicester hosting Liverpool.

The bottom half of the table on this Sunday morning is:

Pos Team Played GD Pts Max PTS (bold)
11 Chelsea 35 -05 43 52
12 Palace 36 -09 43 49
13 Wolves 36 -22 40 46
14 Boscombe 36 -32 39 45

15 West Ham 35 -12 37 46
16 Florist 36 -31 33 39
17 Everton 35 -21 32 41
18 Leeds 36 -25 31 37
19 Leicester 35 -15 30 39
20 Scummers 36 -35 24 30

E&OE

Oh yeah, Florist was getting a point was annoying. On the other hand, it makes Chelsea’s chances of a top half finish remote and nil if Ivan Toney and the Deep Sea Divers beat West Ham this arvo.

Updates this afternoon and on Monday night.

PS. The lateness of this has nothing to do with Sweden winning the Eurovision Song Contest.

Apologies to Kenneth Wolstenholme: some people are posting on social media, they think it’s all over. It is now!

Without kicking a ball we are safe, mathematically safe, mathematically certainly safe, safe, safer, safest. It’s also confirmed, we are staying up, etc.

Everton were defeated by Man City meaning that their maximum points haul is now 38. With three teams unable to reach our points total, it’s job done. Walking away from Anfield in August, who’d a thunk it? Everyone had us to finish rock bottom. We must now finish at least 17th.

West Ham lost to Brentford and so no position changes in the bottom half of the table. That result also means that Chelsea cannot finish in the top half. In fact, unless my maths are way off, the teams that will finish in top and bottom halves of the table are now decided.

So, is this an end to this thread? No, it was cunningly given the title Odd Three Odd, so that it could carry on after we are safe, mathem… you know. Because it is still interesting; who’s going down with the Scummers?

Updates tomorrow night after Leicester vs. Liverpool with next weekend’s fixtures.
Chelsea in 11th can still catch Fulham in 10th, but apart from that...happy days.

Although Man City and Utd away and Newcastle home is a big ask.

Isn’t it great being able to look at the remaining fixtures and work out the different combinations with the knowledge that, whatever happens, the very worst is finishing 16th.

First a correction. Chelsea can finish in the top half above Flum but they have to beat both Manchesters and Newcastle.

The Leicester players seemed to have half given up in the style of Southampton allowing Salah to be profligate in front of goal. That was a bit of a shame as a win for the Foxes would have put Everton and Florist very much back in peril. The Leicester supporters emulated their counterparts ‘down the road’ by leaving the ground in droves well before the final whistle.

Tonight’s result means that West Ham are only goal difference away from safety. Some might say they are as good as there. Importantly, WHam have a very big say in who goes down. They play Leeds and Leicester.

A win for us on Saturday could help to deny Man U a Champions League spot.
