With Latics just days away from their huge game with Bournemouth in the third round of the FA Cup, a new study has unveiled the Boundary Park outfit as the biggest giant killers in the competition over the last 25 years.

The Giant Killers of the FA Cup, a campaign from BetVictor, has analysed the difference in league positions between clubs in every game from the third round onwards over the last two-and-a-half decades, and has discovered that in total Latics have defeated teams a combined 264 places above them - more than any other club.

Latics' biggest giant kill came against Premier League Fulham two years ago, when they overcame 63 positions to win 2-1 at Craven Cottage, while wins over Liverpool and Manchester City have also been significant giant kills.

A win over Bournemouth would take their total to 323, with 59 places separating the home side and the Championship challengers.

This game must not be played.

I find seeing some youngsters and fringe players quite exciting, to see what they can do. My worry comes when its two sides making wholesale changes, thats when the game can become totally disjointed and dull!
Totally agree. I'm quite looking forward to seeing how our best youngsters and fringe first-teamers get on. Hoping that Danjuma is fit and can get some competitive minutes into his legs too.

Will begovic start in goal or will we give young Dennis ago?
I think it was already reported somewhere that Dennis will be playing for this game. We can't really afford not to tbh, it could be his only competitive game this season and he is now our permanent backup keeper, so.........

FA Cup Third Round

The Cherries take a break from their league programme after their hard fought three points win at Stoke. Next game is also away from Dean Court, this time up North to Oldham and their ground at Boundary Park. This game is the Third Round of the FA Cup against Oldham Athletic (the Latics) of League 2.

Oldham manager is the Australian Harry Kewell who has played for both Leeds United and Liverpool during his playing career and also represented his country. He joined Oldham in August last year, he had previously managed Notts County and before that Crawley Town. Oldham Athletic are in 14th place in the table.

The Latics reached the second round of the FA Cup with a win over National League South side Hampton and Richmond 2-3 and in the next round they were again away from home against League 2 side Bradford City, Oldham ran out 1-2 victors to enter into the third round.

The last time our club played them on their ground was in March 2013 in League 1. This was the second game in AFCB’s eight game winning run out of the last nine games of the season, the last game ended in a draw. AFCB beat the Latics by the only goal of the game scored by Brett Pitman with his 12th goal of the season. Previous to that winning run AFCB had lost five in a row. The Cherries finished in the second automatic spot behind the Champions Doncaster Rovers and were promoted up into the Championship. Going the other way out of League 1 and into League 2 were Portsmouth, this was the time of our rise up the leagues and Pompey’s slide down from the Premier League, how fortunes change in football.

The only other time we have met Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup was way back on the 11th December 1954 and we were home and 1-0 winners, the scorer Allen in front of a crowd of 13,402. In the third round at home we lost to WBA 0-1 in front of 22,794.
In all our matches with them home and away AFCB have W 22, D 16, L 15.

Oldham Team News
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Alfie McCalmont are slight doubts.

Oldham Player To Watch
Danny Rowe has scored in both their cup wins and has scored 4 in the league in 8 starts with 3 assists and is just back after injury. Leading scorer with 9 goals is midfielder Conor McAleny. Dylan Bahamboula has the most assists with 7.

AFCB Team News
This could be the game where Arnaut Danjuma gets a run out after his injury. JT will probably rest a number of those who have been playing recently and give some of those a start who have been on the bench or on the fringe.

AFCB Player To Watch
Sam Surridge should get a start and try and make his mark on the game. When Sam was on loan at Oldham he scored one (penalty) of Oldham’s two goals to knock Fulham out of the FA Cup in the third round on the 6th January 2019 at Craven Cottage. Also any returning from injury who get a start see how they hold up after missing a number of games.

I'm looking forward to (hopefully) see all of these get a start:

Zemura
Oforborh
Anthony
Kilkenny

All four have, at some point, shown they have something about them. The chances of displacing a bigger name seem small though, without getting some competitive 90s where they make a real difference.

I know it's hard to do that in a team that has never played together. Sometimes you have to make your own luck though.

How can a professional footballer work from home and where did this 'essential workers' thing come from?

It's not from our government otherwise millions more of us would be sat at home ranting on message boards!

Now that they plan to do draw for rounds 4 and 5 together, it's really important the youngsters play and play well. Anyone who doesn't will certainly get sent out on loan if we lose or if JT can see far enough in the draw that he can't use them in later rounds.

Just hope they all start in their true positions.

I think the latest terminology is ‘critical workers’.

OK then.. bloody 'Key Workers'.......that did come from Government....or maybe that was to do with the NHS !
Whatever..the kissy/huggy goal celebration stuff at PL and other leagues isn't exactly giving out a good message or promoting safe habits is it ! The tw@ts are not wearing masks like the rest of us are meant to do...and being on big money contracts they haven't had to worry about income like millions of others.
Its all wrong !

There is a rumour going round that the game will be switched to Dean Court because the Oldham pitch is unfit to play on.
