The what I did on my holibobs thread

I took 3 weeks out in September to 'do' Canada (BC)

Flew into Seattle, got ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island where my bro lives. Did a 3 music festival & travelled up island with my bro to Tofino & Ucluelet for a few days. Saw a bald eagle on a kayaking trip and a black bear during the salmon run on the way back.

Took a bike to Salt Spring Island for a few days, met some cool locals and biked back.

Got the ferry back to Seattle, picked up my gf from the airport and drove to Vancouver. Did some whale watching- saw 14 hump backs and some sealions.

That's the very condensed version. Absolutely stunning place, amazing people. Cannot recommend Canada (BC) enough, would live there if I could.

Seattle is very edgy with a lot of very visceral social issues which is a shame because it's otherwise very cool. I wouldn't safe taking kids there.

Absolutely beautiful,if I was younger would move there in a heartbeat

Yeah indeed. I love visiting cities and Cairo on the list. But again, imagine the chaos, hectiness and 'cukture' differences woukd make me uneasy with a young child.

Theme parks are chaotic in Orlando, buy you never feel threatened or worried milckyy mouse or the 'locals' will act in a way that woukd make you feel deeply uncomfortable, threatened...

Last thing I'd want is to hand pick a holiday that had me feeling anxious in the build up to visiting. At least with my daughter! Simply not worth it when there are so many other places to choose from.

I was 17 and my brother was 11 when we did the pyramid tour from Cyprus. There were a few kids on the tour. We also did the museum tour to see the Tutankhamun exhibition which was great. Basically they shepherd you there and back (I think we had a police escort on the coaches following some terror attacks a few years before). Once on the streets there are poor people trying to sell you things everywhere but they brief you not to interact with them, and they warn you about all the scams. As long as you stick with the guides and don't wander off you're safe.

Going into the pyramids is quite a claustrophobic affair (unless it's changed). People climbing in and out of the same narrow passageway. No air con, so if it's a hot day it can be sweltering. You don't have to go in though, and there's not a huge amount to see once inside. The main spectacle is seeing the Pyramids and Sphinx up close, the scale is incredible.

I don't remember feeling anxious about any of it. It's only a few hours and then you're back on the boat. Might be different as a parent though.

Went on a family holiday to north Devon this summer. My boy LOVES trains and anything on rails so we went to Lynton & Lynmouth:

Beautiful place. Reminded me of Switzerland. And practically on your doorstep if you live in Bournemouth and you don't get stuck behind a tractor for 27 miles.

Saw a bald eagle on a kayaking trip
Why didn’t he just fly like the rest of his ilk? :)

Sorry for the dad joke…..my nephew is a complete outdoor adventure nut and went to Canada (Revelstoke) for 3 months just before covid hit, he has been there ever since and has no intention of going back to the UK. The pictures he sends us (as with yours) are stunning, we intend to “Do Canada” once my boy gets a bit bigger so we can really make the most of it.

Went to the valley of the Kings 20 years ago ,amazing place steeped in history, stayed in Luxor at the Sonesta,a lovely American chain hotel, cheap as chips at that time.Loved the calling of the faithful, which has a very ancient, evocative feel to it,people a pain in a""" always hassling, some guy even offered 5 camels for the Misses! My daughters and wife were constantly pestered by leering weirdos whenever we left the safe environs of the hotel

No apologies ever needed for a terrible dad joke :grinning:

My brother is the same. Emigrated about 6 months after covid hit. Covid was the final kick up the ar$e to make the move. Spent the first year there mostly in various lockdowns but now he is loving it and has no intention of coming back. I can absolutely see why. Very depressing coming back to the UK.

Photos don't do it justice either. Get out there as soon as you can!

Still have the Valley of the Kings on the list. Will leave my son at home for that one I think!

Has a unique flavour/vibe (cajun?).
Creole. The cajuns are the displaced Acadians, more concentrated in other parts of Louisiana. New Orleans is for me the most "foreign" city in the US, in a good way, and also these days probably a personal security nightmare.

We did something very similar. Vancouver island was incredible. We really njoyed Seattle and walked everywhere, never felt any more or less safe than any other US city. Out hotel was a bit out so it was a good 30 mins to walk into the centre too.

A bit further south you have Mount St Helens and Portland. Well worth a visit next time. Spelling Columbia river gorge.

If you have to choose, west coast is the best. The east might have more cities but its as flat as a pancake and featureless. Doing a road trip from Montreal through Ottawa and along to Toronto I expected a bit more to look at :)

Not sure when you went but I think the fentanyl problem has hit Seattle hard. They have a large central homeless population living literally on the street, spanning a few blocks. Lots of open drug taking and dealing in broad daylight. We stayed in the centre and witnessed a stabbing on the way to the apartment and were kept awake by addicts literally screaming for help.

Would like to explore more of Washington state though.

Great photos. Spent a lot of time in those areas and further north into Yukon and Alaska. Wildlife is incredible, bears most days, wolves, bison, moose etc.

It is an incredible place, when I was there you could see shards of ancient potter just lying around on the ground, you got a right bollocking if you got caught taking anything mind , and I didn't have the minerals to try. The nile is awesome, on a boat watching the sun come up over the Valley of the kings is a sight to see
