Eddie Howe - New Stadium Vital

Why would he make snide comments in the press when he would be far more likely to tell them in person? If it was supposed to be a dig at them, it would have been more obvious.

Going back to the original interview, I think Eddie has said what he believes will be best for the future of our club in the coming years, no more, no less.

No hint of him leaving, just listen what he said about how special and unique this club is at the award ceremony recently.

I think this line from the article is key:
"It's tough to recruit players when we're playing in the stadium that we are," Howe said. "The training ground, as beautiful as it is, the size, the lack of space - again that's a difficulty for us."

My guess (and hope) is that he's priming the pump for an announcement from the team very soon. If the club has any say in this (though it's possible they're at the mercy of some level of government), they will want to make a splashy announcement before, or at the beginning of, the summer transfer window. It would be a critical bargaining chip to be able to show prospective signings the designs for the new stadium (knowing it is approved and moving ahead), and to show that work is already underway on the training facility. Otherwise, we're still just a tinpot club with a popular manager.
I just hope your right, that would show us as a progessive club! Something must happen sooner or later.

I tend to think that you are right and that this is he start of a "charm offensive" before the stadium planning is officially submitted. Are the comments some sort of coded threat for the owners? I doubt it. Eddies far to cute for that. More likely they are to start getting support onside before the enivitable planning shenanigans.

I doubt a local non footballing resident who gets his drive / road blocked every other saturday would listen to Eddie Howe......he ain't going to fix it for them, charm offensive or not.

Yeah but if it swings public opinion in general in favour of the need for a new ground it will go through despite a few local protests - like any other planning application. Obviously they will need to demonstrate that they have a half decent traffic plan in place to keep as many as possible onside.

We do need to remember just how much all of this might cost. I have just cross referenced some relatively new stadia against an index of building construction tenders and come up with, at estimated 2019 tender prices:

Swansea £42 million
Hull £46 million
Southampton £59 million
Reading £77 million
Brighton £126 million

Add in the £4 million to acquire the training ground site plus its build cost of, what, £6/7 million. Then there is the cost of a new athletics centre, demolition, professional fees etc. That means even a relatively small simple design like Swansea or Hull takes the overall cost of ground and training centre to a minimum of £55/60 million. Much much more for a development with other income streams like the Amex or the Madjeski with its hotel and conference suites.

It isn't really surprising that the club is taking time over this, even without the complexity of ensuring planning is likely to be granted.

...so when do the owners roll the dice?

after another 120 million is in the coffers for the next PL season?

I am,like many, disappointed that more information and something more solid has not been revealed. We have been talking about this for over two years now and still we are told it is in the planning stages? If that is the case then something has gone wrong somewhere?

The Stadium is the most important factor to us being able to establish ourselves as a top club in this country in terms of achievement off the field... as well as on it under a brilliant young manager who's dynamic has swept us to The PL...

As time passes the whole new ground thing looks increasly less likely. A new South stand and a 15k capacity for next season seems the best we can expect.

Can't see another season of receiving insane amounts of money is actually that relevant as if income increases so do the outgoings, it is not like we are banking the majority like WBA did when yoyoing between Pl and Championship. We are hardly breaking even, as the TV money increases so do the demands of the players, without a wage cap it will sadly never change.

...but that is what I am saying about rolling the dice...we may have to cut our cloth accordingly, and yes we could go down, but then we would sell players like Ake, Begovic ,King, Wilson Ibe and Fraser and reap some rewards for them. At least we would have the infrastructure to see that we could increase our fanbase and income. At some point we must build a better stadium or we will perish back to League One pretty soon without having managed our wealth in the interests of securing AFC Bournemouth...one thing is certain and that is that one season we will go down...we need some legacy from our time in the PL?

The club is profitable year on year without banking massive amounts of money. The PL money in of itself isn't going to fund a squad, a training ground, and a stadium at the same time.

However, progressing the infrastructure = keeping Howe happy = most likely staying in the PL = keeping the year on year money coming in = our shareholders and/or the bank being confident enough to invest/lend money for the large up front cost of a stadium.

This is how I believe our money men are looking at it.
Keep investing in the squad just enough to stay in the PL, and collect the big cheque each year.

Build a new stadium and not invest in the squad, risk relegation and financial meltdown.
Tough call.

Tough call yep....,one that needs to be made soon either way.
For me ..go for the Stadium. Risk everything and ride our luck rather than the more boring option of just surviving each year with players that can get 40 points. We've ticked that one off - let's have a different angle aimed at the long term!

Nothing can happen until the training ground is built. Just because we've been talking about a new stadium doesn't mean that we get to set the timelines. At the end of the day everything the club has told us they have delivered on. I'd not be surprised if we're waiting on the Athletics to accept an offer. Alternatively we're waiting on Structadene so we know what happens with that half of Dean Court, and look at what arses they were to negotiate with the last few years

Hardly. The latest accounts show that Max and Peak6 have lent the club interest free £34.7 million and £19.6 million respectively. Add in their respective initial investments and the operating profit of £14 million last year is probably only a 3 or 4% return on investment.

What's more the notes to the accounts state that we paid £3.775 million for the Canford training ground site, plus what £6 or £7 million to build it? It looks as if that £10 million or so development is going to be funded from trading income. So no indication that Max or the Americans intend to take significant profits out.

The new ground is a different scale of investment though and will need significant and separate funding. The club may just be bogged down in pulling together the detail of the financial package and the planning considerations, or they may indeed have got cold feet about the cost. Only time will tell.
