Something just occurred to me which we may not have been considering regarding our thoughts on financing the new stadium.
I have little doubt that most, if not all, of this wonderful Sky money we are receiving is flying straight out of the till to pay the wages and transfer fees which have given us the squad we now have. I think it is very wishful thinking to believe that there is any spare cash lying around. We receive more but we are having to spend more. Effectively we are probably only marginally better off than we ever were. Bearing that in mind, if we want to finance the new stadium with income, one strategy would be to build a squad strong enough, to be able to let a few transfer windows pass without blowing any more cash. BUT ( and this is the thing that just occurred to me ) we are increasingly in a position whereby somebody might offer us crazy money for one of our stars. So far we've managed to hang on to our most valued players but the sale of a top player for megabucks combined with a relatively quiet summer in the transfer window COULD see the stadium kitty getting filled rather quickly. Of course we would have to replace whoever we sold with somebody half decent but that's what we have the academy for ( although we are stalling on the new training ground, which makes little sense in this case ). But anyway, maybe Max and the others are just waiting for a nice additional windfall ( on top of the now necessary PL money ) to reduce the finance gap to be filled in building the new stadium. With the money being offered for players these days, one good sale could make a massive difference towards financing the stadium.
