The statement we’ve all been waiting for

I think that Slow Down Derek, who works in the property business and understands how commercial leases work, has repeatedly said that the landlord cannot charge extra rent for improvements that we have paid for. Is that correct, SDD ?
All I need is confirmation that we own it as some woman o
Made this a while back and I think I was slightly off around the treeline/carpark, but this is close enough to what land Structadene own

Absolutely this. This for me is the most damning part. They couldn't even bring themselves to reaffirm their commitment to the new training complex. It would have been a great way for them to sweeten the bitter pill but they couldn't bring themselves to do it. That is quite a worry, suggests that there is a reluctance to commit to ANY SORT of investment at this time.
Absolutely both these posts !

I'm fairly chilled about the main message - there is an alternative to incompetence or stringing us along (neither of which Eddie would live with) and that is that something has changed - whether it's Max's circumstances, the Americans or some other hitherto unknown investors - we don't know.

Re cloaking the statement in positivity - I couldn't agree more.

I am with you on this. It would not surprise me to see some change at the top in terms of ownership - either total or partial. Clearly the Board realise they need to do everything possible to keep us in the top flight from the playing staff point of view - if they don't their investment becomes virtually worthless. But for some reason they are reticent to fund the stadium - no one knows why apart from the owners themselves.
as for the statement itself its pretty much what I expected.

Our major owners are Max and the Americans. Max is of course a reserved character and we are not going to get to know how sanctions on Russians in UK affects him directly. I can't help thinking that the lack of momentum, that he would need to be full-square behind to make things happen, is perhaps explained by this. As a UK based Russian he was always going to be caught in the crossfire. The lack of drive and information COULD directly route back to his own personal travails. Hence no extra cash or risk taking. The timing of our national fallout aligns perfectly. As for he Yanks, no idea but they are purely here as business investors I would suggest. No emotional buy in and don't care if they leave a legacy. Definitely not in for the long haul if we have the misfortune of relegation.

It's the lack of clarity on the training ground/academy that concerns me; lacking those facilities means that it is harder to attract players and also those not in the match day squad don't get any quality fixtures to keep them sharp. Investing in those elements should help reduce outlay on incoming players by helping to bring through younger talent. This is exactly what Eddie is good at, and we should be investing in that area at the very least.

Unless we've already been told that we will not be allowed Grade 1 due to geographical proximity to Southampton? Which wouldn't surprise me, and would also dampen desire to spend in that area. Didn't Bristol recently close their Grade 1 or 2 academy??

Max has just spent £10 million on buying a recording studio in London with a promise to put further Investment into it. He would appear to be unaffected by the sanctions etc.

Yes there are laws to protect the tenant in these scenarios although it is possible for the landlord and tenant to agree to circumvent these laws in the lease - it would depend on the wording of the original lease but I can't see any reason why they would have done this.

Usually a tenant will require a landlord's permission to improve the property but the landlord cannot refuse a 'reasonable' request.

I've not seen the lease in this case but I'm sure it has been posted before that the rent is index linked and therefore goes up irrespective of what the market value is. The problem AFCB have in terms of the rent is that the landlord could demand a high asking rent when the lease is due to be renewed - they could argue that the increased revenue that the tenant could generate from the property due to being in the PL means they should pay more rent. Technically they would have to disregard tenants improvements but that won't necessarily stop them demanding more rent for the remaining property. To be fair they would probably do this whether the improvements were made or not. You could argue that the bargaining position of the club would be weakened if the landlord knows they have invested millions and are therefore unlikely to move. As Theresa May might say - you've got to convince them that you're prepared to walk away.

Just increase the sodding south stand capacity by hook or crook and build the corners on club owned land. Watford on promotion built a corner and stuck more seats elsewhere, only 1000 in all and I doubt it was financially viable but they obviously did it to get more people in to watch PL football.

What is it with our board?

Swallow the bitter pill that is preventing a brand new stadium being built and crack on with letting more people see football NOW.

I like the way you worked a bit of Paul Weller in there mate

Does that include our owner who took us up to the Premier League by backing his manager and so far kept us there by strengthening the team?

If he can’t match the investment off the pitch with the same on the pitch then maybe yes......

We are a tinpot club run by a tinpot Board who can’t organise a p*ss up in a brewery.

We’ve grown too fast too quickly IMO and unless the club match the on pitch success we’ll be back to being that Tinpot Club that got to the top but did nothing to leave a legacy to show for it.

Something just occurred to me which we may not have been considering regarding our thoughts on financing the new stadium.
I have little doubt that most, if not all, of this wonderful Sky money we are receiving is flying straight out of the till to pay the wages and transfer fees which have given us the squad we now have. I think it is very wishful thinking to believe that there is any spare cash lying around. We receive more but we are having to spend more. Effectively we are probably only marginally better off than we ever were. Bearing that in mind, if we want to finance the new stadium with income, one strategy would be to build a squad strong enough, to be able to let a few transfer windows pass without blowing any more cash. BUT ( and this is the thing that just occurred to me ) we are increasingly in a position whereby somebody might offer us crazy money for one of our stars. So far we've managed to hang on to our most valued players but the sale of a top player for megabucks combined with a relatively quiet summer in the transfer window COULD see the stadium kitty getting filled rather quickly. Of course we would have to replace whoever we sold with somebody half decent but that's what we have the academy for ( although we are stalling on the new training ground, which makes little sense in this case ). But anyway, maybe Max and the others are just waiting for a nice additional windfall ( on top of the now necessary PL money ) to reduce the finance gap to be filled in building the new stadium. With the money being offered for players these days, one good sale could make a massive difference towards financing the stadium.

See something like this would be accepted by the majority IMO.

I would love to know what the Board’s 5 year plan is for example, but I don’t think we even have a 5 week plan to be honest.

From ticket sales, to queue management, to treatment of Exiles (my real bug bear!), to Comms, to fan engagement there’s a lot that needs doing to get us out of the Tinpot mindset. And that starts at the top.
