Non - Brexit

...here's one...why don't we develop our own manufacturing instead of relying on other countries to bail us out?

surely the whole idea of cutting ourselves free of The EU was to give jobs to us british folk...and not have any johnny foreigners here....I am afraid that as a race we are often too myopic and insular...hence this mess..
I was saying this to a colleague this morning. Why aren't the government pushing the electric car in this country. How about investing in Swindon on this. Another thing is, people keep whining about the disused ship yards why aren't we investing in ship building in this country instead of letting the Dutch have large swathes of it ?

To build electric cars which are both innovative and environmentally friendly, you would expect huge investment from the EU. This could be why Honda are closing their non EU plants in England and Turkey.

Ask Dyson to come back from Spore and use the Honda Swindon facilities. He’s a patriot.

As for ships. No one can compete with Japan S Korea and China on cost and volume and quality.

Who will buy a vessel that costs 30 mill in the U.K. when it costs 25 in S Korea? We could never compete with Far East on shipbuilding hence why it died.

Singapore is relevant in shipping terms because of the amount of chartering contracts done there but also as it’s one of the worlds main bunkering ports. Load coal in Brazil and discharge in China, but always re fuel in spore. We don’t have their geography.

The main loading and discharge ports for raw materials bypass and/or will never need a U.K. port. We will always take and discharge container vessels but the main port in Europe is Rotterdam so anything going from the EU to the East Coast USA can bypass us no problem. Also Rotterdam is another of the worlds majors bunkering ports.

Don't know what Dyson has to do with this and as for ship building ok then forget it we'll never be able to compete. Let's open some more call centres.

They might Invest in the infrastructure (charging stations etc ) but its down to the car manufacturers to Invest in building the things. Public money should really go into improving or subsiding public transport first and foremost.

You literally said just earlier the Govt should invest in electric and use Swindon as per your conversation with your colleague.

Dyson plans to develop and make electric cars, but they won’t be built here as they will be built in Spore/Malaysia which ..... has a trade deal with the EU.

I was also implying that a proud BRITISH patriot who vocally encouraged people we should leave the EU should be there to fill the gap.

Regarding shipbuilding, which shipyard in Holland is a big builder of vessels ?

Oh Sorry all I forgot my name on here, with regards the last few interactions. I’m not trying to stick up for the Dutch. I have a Dutch surname but that’s my only connection. Ireland, via Scotland and then England.

So can we not Build and use innovative ideas to catch up with the East over a couple of decades...as they did to us years ago.
Ive been in Rotterdam and Antwerp, huge ports and I must admit if They couldnt compete with the Far East then We would struggle in our present state ..DORMANT......but we have to try some way forward, with maybe the help of Dutch( very determined and practical nation) expertise; we have the Ports in Abundance !
Geography?..we are closer to Canada, Scandinavia, this side of USA, the Mediterranean, North Africa, Hamburg, Kiel, Gdansk! etc !
We cant just sit and accept that the Far East dominate Sea Trade For Ever? Can we? Maybe im in a mere Dreamworld!

Dyson has shown his true colours. I was talking about taxpayers money being invested in the manufacturing sector.

Your first point is interesting. Yes we can and will have innovation but we cannot physically build a vessel as cheap as they can. Even if we ‘believe’ lots, the maths don’t add up. The innovation in shipbuilding comes from engineering and many of them sit in the U.K. being paid a good penny to do so but that is our role. No one will begrudge those people but that is what we as a country now do. We design or engineer but we allow other people to build because it’s cheaper.

As for Dutch ports, they service huge chunks of the EU which geographically we cannot do. Off the top of my head Bavaria (BMW et al) is just as close to Rotterdam as Hamburg. If we expanded Felixstowe you would still need another smaller vessel to light off the 1000 containers or so and take them to mainland Europe. We could offer a service but it would slow things down.

A container full of car parts from China, owned by a German company, won’t stop in the U.K. to be unloaded, go through customs in and out, then get loaded on another vessel to go to Rotterdam, unloaded, customs, then to be put on a train to south Germany. It’s too slow. Using us would slow things down.

Fair play and I agree. It’s an open goal. If they want to encourage electric cars then wow they have a factory and a skilled workforce there ready to go in a few years. Unfortunately I think this Govt will let it slip through their hands and engineer it so it could never be a success for anyone who takes over.

Interesting...the points and reasoning you make...complicated, yet not so, if you think logistically...which at this time is more relevant than the somewhat more ' Romantic' hopeful, notions of myself! But Hope coming with Change over Time is where i'm at !
How the Brexit Outcome or my descendants lives fit into that...I really dont have a clue!

Well this site is mainly read by those of a 'left wing' viewpoint so it will be interesting to see the thoughts here.

occasionally, I look at this (written in 2016) for a laugh. was tednphil being ironic, or is he/she seriously delusional?!
