Non - Pandemic

Yes, summer holidays should be the main headlines. That’s the national priority...

Easy to spot the entitled folk and funny that many seem to work in the media and political class, because its all they seem to bloody ask about. Never mind opening up basic facilities at home and allowing people to simply visit their families and friends. For some it seems all about when they can get back to the Algarve.

Been a lot of blame on government re lockdowns, closing down too late or opening up too early, travel corridors etc.

But the media for me need to be criticised as well for constant pressure being put on ministers re holidays, opening up etc when they know the scientific/medical experts have been proved right nearly every time with their advice, which unfortunately the government had been either too slow or quick with their reactions.

Then you have those backbenchers..........

It's possible for people to be concerned about more than one issue at once. Even ones that may be less important than others and concern the future months down the line. Do you jump up and down when someone wants a shoplifter prosecuted after stealing from their shop by saying "you want to prioritise this when there are murderers out there".

What is the problem with people wanting to know about the possibility of holidays? Some people have had the most stressful 12 months of their lives dealing with trying to work from home, teach their kids and keep their family safe and they need a break.

Having said that we still have the usual media trick of asking ministers gotcha questions about whether they have booked their holiday then jumping on inconsistent answers. The advice is clear enough, there's no guarantees you will be able to go on holiday so if you book you are taking a risk and that choice is down to individuals to make.

Key word was “priority”.

Do you not think the media priority has disproportionately reported on the importance of holidays over schools, furlough, self employed support, business support, vaccine second doses for those with Pfizer?

I guess it’s the theme of the week.

Next week it will be something else.

Trouble is everyone wants their thing they like doing opened first .

Be it going to the pub, football or going on holiday .

Just need to be patient and keep fingers cross the vaccines work and eventually we will have a positive long term outlook .

Not especially, I've seen them ask questions on all of those things. MPs are asking them too as they are no doubt being asked them by their constituents. Some of them are even asking about cladding on flats.

the Brexit Party has been reborn as Reform UK.
It is the same legal entity, with similar branding and many of the same key players.
But with the new name comes a new focus - criticism of the government's handling of Covid and, in particular, opposition to prolonged lockdown.
Reform UK chairman Richard Tice said: "The suffering and the misery of an extended lockdown is so great that the real danger is that the cure is actually worse than the disease itself, in terms of the impact on the mental health of young children, the lost education, the inequality, the impact on businesses, the jobs lost.
"There is a huge impact, which is not being properly taken account of by ministers and MPs."
Mr Tice, a businessman and one of the founders of the Leave Means Leaves campaign, played a big part in the Brexit Party and is taking a leading role in Reform UK.

I think domestic normality, or aiming for it first is the best way to go. I think most folk would forsake a holiday this summer to be able to at least see friends and go to the pub etc...
More money for next year too  We're planning to go to Australia next year - was supposed to be this year, so happy to sit it out for a bit..

Depends which week you are talking about. There was huge publicity in the late summer/autumn about getting the kids back. Then it was all about xmas, then a lot about kids after xmas, now because we are heading towards easter it switches to holidays. If the kids go back it will switch to pubs, shops, cinemas etc.

I suspect Australia and New Zealand will be off until everyone there - and I mean almost literally everyone, children included - has been vaccinated.

There was a lot about schools at Christmas ramping things up into a frenzy to close the schools down despite the science always pointing towards primary schools being open not making one iota of difference to the R or community infections.

Sure, close them for a short period when community infection rates are so high and there is a doubt and worry over the new variant but we’re now not in that position and instead should be looking at primary schools reopening immediately after after half term, like in Scotland and in Wales... but England, we wait because it’s more important to discuss whether or not we should be collecting Sun holiday vouchers...
It’s already changed from an announcement on the 22nd to the W/c the 22nd throwing the schools preparations up on the air again.

I would have the schools back now.
however, you can't help people being interested about the chances of a holiday, a beer in a pub, a trip to the shops, a meal in a restaurant or watching a game of football or cricket any time soon in the coming year. Each person has their own interests and priorities.
FWIW once the top four groups have got their immunity from the first jab then I think everything should open up. The mantra was protect the NHS and the vulnerable - well getting those first four groups vaccinated achieves that.

As I said before, fully understand all of that. My gripe is the media and when and where they decide to throw mud next.

In regards to all the priorities looking at the bigger picture, summer holidays during a pandemic when we've already seen what a clusterf*** it was less than 6 months ago...

But there is one absolutely massive difference - the vaccines. 13.5 million vaccinated in this country already, at the current rate it will be 25 million in 4 weeks time. You have to open stuff up otherwise what is the point of vaccinating.
