Thierry Henry

Make of this what you will.

Thierry Henry has reached an agreement in principle with Bournemouth to become their next manager, Football Insider can reveal.

The 43-year-old, who is currently head coach of MLS side CF Montreal, is close to being named the permanent replacement for Jason Jason Tindall, who was sacked at the beginning of February.

Bournemouth assembled a shortlist including Henry, his ex-Arsenal team-mate Patrick Vieira, as well as the former Schalke and Huddersfield manager David Wagner and current caretaker boss Jonathan Woodgate.

A Cherries source has told Football Insider that Arsenal legend Henry has been pursued strongly and has been offered the position.

He has agreed in principle and a contract is being drawn up for him to be the new manager.

You mean their first season joining the MLS whilst establishing the "franchise". Hardly a yardstick is it?

You’re caught in your own catch 22. Backed by man city being a first season shouldn’t matter with all those resources. There have been plenty of other successful first season teams with no backing from a huge club.

Ugh Henry. There are so many good managers in MLS. Henry is not one of them. And will do nothing to help our defense.

Since Henry joined Montreal their PF has dropped and PA increased.

Perhaps you were lucky enough to miss the Cherryettes?

Does anyone remember the local American Football team formed in the early ninties(?) called the Bournemouth Bobcats who practiced and played in the Kings Park athletic stadium?

Obviously, as with any self respecting US football team, they needed a team of cheerleaders. I always found it amusing, although regrettable, that there nickname became the Bournemouth Bobdogs !!!

Happy days, and no offence intended.

I’m indifferent. Not a great record so far from his managerial career, but equally you do wonder if all this squad needs is a manager they can respect. He’ll play attacking football.

Will reserve judgment.
I agree that one thing you can say about Henry is that at least his record and work ethic would shame those in our squad not giving their all currently. He could bring heart to the team if not head. Would still probably prefer Wagner at the end of the day though.

Jumping on board with your allow-myself-to-be-seduced-by-the-idea philosophy...

How do we know he hasn't been "studying the Championship?" It could be that he wants to manage in English football at some point in the future and he recognised that his best way in is through the Championship, and so has spent time studying the league and players. This could be part of what impressed the board?

On these varying reports, could one explanation be that he applied for the job, had an interview, the board liked what they heard and now they need to officially contact Montreal to be allowed to officially speak to him re. agreeing a contract? I'm not sure how things work in this field, but in other professions people go off and interview elsewhere all the time before bringing it up with current employers.

CAVEAT: I know nothing and am reaaally clutching at straws.

Football always has different case law - Bournemouth need to seek permission from the club that owns the contract to do the interview. Of course, agents blur the simplicity of that arrangement.

I was surprised to learn they're still a thing! Here they are at Britbowl33 in the BAFA Division 2 South Final in 2019. I won't give away the result in case anyone wants to watch it!

Our of interest because I haven't got a clue, how are Montreal in comparison to the rest of the league? Regardless of Mr Henry being there, would you say they're over or under performing?

The only thing I can say in favour of this, is that I doubt Henry will be coming cheap. Be it his own salary, or more to the point squad budgets. If you're Max, you don't replace Jason Tindall with Thierry Henry if you're cutting back surely. And if you're Henry, you don't lend your reputation to a club that will tie your hands with cutbacks.

Henry may be a total disaster, but I have to imagine he'll be backed with player retention and recruitment from Max, or else he wouldn't be coming.

With Max's support we rose to the promised land.

Who could not be grateful for his faith and backing of Eddie & Jason - and the lower league stalwarts who have brought us to the present day - one where we now think of championship life as failure !.

In reality it is ! , we all know that - small ground, little tv money & covid into the bargain = heading south.

Star dust player credentials of TH though - is this really us ? - commercially a great short term move for club I guess - the interest will bring revenue, but worry it could be about getting a sale of the club for good bucks at the cost of stability a few years down the line.

Personally I'd go for JW or Wagner.

But in Max we trust.
I remember all too well the crushing disappointment all those years ago watching other lower league clubs being financed by so called White knights and thinking "how come it's never us" . He and Eddie gave us the dream which we all knew wouldn't last forever. If he walked away tomorrow he'd be alright by me.

I'd been thinking along those lines too. You have to think Max is serious about going back up sooner rather than later.

Agree. Really does fly in the face of the suggestion that Max wants out, and does once again show how he has backed this club financially.

This, you don't get a big name in on the promise of the bank is empty..
