Non - Pandemic

U.K. Health Secretary Matt Hancock hailed Tuesday’s announcement as another success for British life sciences.
“The U.K. government has funded these clinical trials and it is fantastic to see Valneva’s vaccine produces a strong immune response,” he said in a press release. “This vaccine will be made onshore in Livingston in Scotland, giving another boost to British life science, and if approved will play an important role in protecting our communities.”
The French company said it is in “ongoing” discussions with other regulators. Valneva and the European Commission have not signed an advanced purchasing agreement, but completed
“exploratory talks” to secure up to 60 million doses for the bloc.

They are making it up as they go along. I have not heard a single plausible reason or argument as to why there should be a so called 3rd wave with deaths and hospitalisation up to the same level as January. I am convimced some of the so called SAGE experts just love exerting their influence over politicians and scaring everyone. Some of the modelling that is done to get these figures and projections is just complete crap.
I looked at the model predictions included in the SAGE pontificating and they vary from about 80 deaths per day to 1200 per day. How can you take anything seriously when the range of predicted outcomes from different institutions is so vast.
The chair of SAGE needs to remind members to make it clear that they are offering a personal opinion that is not agreed by SAGE. If they dont support the official SAGE advice they should make that clear.

Time for Cummings to launch an inquiry into the performance of SAGE.

I mean it’s literally in the name, but do carry on.

I mean I may not be a scientist - but who else has seen the Spanish Flu wave graph?. Its basically a little bump after the first two big waves.

So - we are going to have a massive third wave, after vaccinations. Whereas the Spanish flu caused a small wave, without vaccinations.

Feel like i'm missing something here...

Not sure you can really study the graphs of deaths for Spanish flu, the estimated death toll ranges from 17 million to 100 million. Various different ideas behind when it actually started etc.

Some even claim the third wave was bigger than the first.

Very quiet on AstraZeneca blood clots on here. EU hesitancy was slated to the hills, now we've seen similar issues. It's still overwhelmingly safer to have the jab than take your chances with the virus but the younger you are the more these odds shift.

Also no scientist, my take would be that we'll hear regular soundbites intended to nudge the public into remaining cautious, even when restrictions are removed. Which may be well intentioned, but risks just confusing and worrying people, at a time when people should be reintroducing themselves to a social life.

Not sure what else we’re supposed to add? I think about a month ago I mentioned blood clotting in the contraceptive pill, but obviously that’s still widely available.

Van Tam weeks ago listed off the potential side affects of paracetamol.

Nothing has really changed has it? As said yesterday, the Oxford vaccine delivers a strong response to the vaccine.

Those who end up seriously ill with coronavirus often have an extreme response to the virus. Those who get the blood clots from the vaccine could well be the very same people who would have had an extreme reaction to the virus.

Perhaps other vaccines will be better suited to the different age categories. But that’s going to be a complex grey area to legislate for that and of course complicate the vaccine roll out.

Not sure what your point is? Something to let the medical authorities keep an eye on by all means. The politician level drama they’ve made was never and still isn’t justified by the data. And now they can't give the things to people, despite suffering a serious 3rd wave and despite squirreling them away from other country's supplies. It's a clusterf**k of their own making.

30 cases in 18m thus far. Compare that to the rates of blood clotting associated with the contraceptive pill, given to young women across the board, carrying a far higher (around 1 in 1000) risk of developing a blood clot.
