Non - Brexit

Lets be honest, he wants enough immigration to be able to hire cheap labour. Which goes against SDDs 'levelling up' vision of businesses starting to raise wages.

Of course it goes against what I've been saying. Unlike Stan I'm not on Tim Martin's side on this.

There seem to be plenty of people that seek to deny that the EU benefits big businesses who want to take advantage of cheap labour and goes against a lot of socialist principles.

I did a week in a Wetherspoons when leaving the Navy. I say a week, I did 3 days.
Sylvan Moon in Northwood.

Ever had a Wethersppons breakfast and wondered why the bacon has black bits on it?
That's due to it being cooked on an unclean griddle that the previous night was charring steaks.
A practice that seems to be alive and well till this day.

As for one in Birmingham saying Eggs Benedict was off the menu as they had no poached eggs in....that left me rolling on the floor.
Surely that was caused by the dirty grill bacon n black bits ?

Compared to the UK!? You're the one in denial.

It was. Kitchen was cleaned properly at night.

I last had a Spoons breakfast in 2016.
Figure of eight in Brum.

Lo and behold the bacon had bits on tasting of burnt steak blood.
Nice.

Compared to the UK!? You're the one in denial.

I'm not anti EU Rob, I voted remain afterall. That said I'm not about to start ignoring the negatives of the thing out of some strange loyalty.

It is a fundamental principle of the EU that labour is a commodity the same as goods and capital. Where you have massive discrepancies in wages, which you do, labour will move to take advantage of higher wages elsewhere. This will surpress wages in the higher wage area and the labour shortage will drive wages up in the labour exporter. Compare changes in real wages in Poland and the UK over the last 10-15 years.

No denial about it.

Wetherspoon's....went in there for first time this year for a pint... not impressed....staff tearing around at top speed but looking miserable and heavily stressed..still waiting after half an hour to get served....went over to a 'manager' who was stood arms folded in the corner 'watching' ..and suggested he lend a hand to his stretched staff to maybe hurry things up due to the circumstances. Others nearby me had waited ages too.

" that's not how it works mate" says he, smirking and fiddling nervously with his device.
I reply..
" of course not mate...in 'normal circumstances'..your in charge so you will delegate tasks...but this is somewhat different if you have a limited number of staff. "...

Just another smirk and more fiddling !

" you don't appear to be 'working' much you lazy prat "...says I...and I left it there and came out....try it again next year.

The pub over the road is doing fine and actually charging less for all beers with a larger selection available...Spoons had only one Craft Ale up and running and just two lagers..with a scaled down food menu to boot.
I know for a fact that Spoons have a ' control room' upstairs with a crew of security bods...all sat doing bugger-all...only coming alive on Friday evenings and Saturday.
I know they are there...I know one of the girls, a neighbour, who works there...she is not a happy bunny and tells me stuff over the garden fence...about the autocratic atmosphere..about the ' if you don't like it - go'..regime ...which already existed but is now worse apparently since the Lockdowns.

The Team Effort is not too good across the whole operation..in that particular outlet...I daresay others will be the same.
Rarely eat in there..as the Missus won't go in at all..her 'Tory Ideals' wont allow it and she is still scared of Covid !
Tbf..the food when i had some was OK for the price.. I've had worse and paid more !

But ...ultimately..How the guy decides to treat his 'poor cracker' staff and customers could be his undoing long term!

I didnt say you were anti-EU. My point is that you think that UK businesses are suddenly going to turn all benevolent and start raising wages, when the reality is, as Martin is showing, that they will simply push for a level of immigration which keeps costs down.

Its called capitalism.

I didn't say they would increase wages because they are going to turn benevolent all of a sudden. I said they will be forced to increase wages if there is a shortage of labour. They will, its demand and supply.

He can push for what he wants, it doesn't alter my opinion. Fwiw EU immigration is very much a benefit in the industry I work in, which is one of the reasons I voted to remain. It clearly has a negative effect on wages in lower paid industries though, which is something the remain campaign stuck their fingers in their ears and pretended wasn't an issue... until they lost that is.

He says, turning a blind eye to Matt Hancock et al.

Plenty to discuss about Hancock in the Pandemic thread Rob, but I struggle to see the relevance to Brexit and Al's question?

Vaccine procurement and the differences therein is directly related to Brexit and directly relates to Al's faux question.

FWIW I hope Hancock disappears from political life the minute the pandemic draws to a close, I don't much like the bloke.
