Last week of the Transfer Window.

They are not about to disclose planned outgoings though, so bear that in mind.

I have no problem with 2 or 3 in, just that others have to make way, nobody addresses this when they unrealistically say 2 more please.

I have updated my squad list to compare to last year as below. For me it already shows we have a deeper squad than last year (obviously depends on opinions of every player) and could, depending on your view let a couple go, knowing we can add in Jan to cover the unknowns rather than spread resources thinly now. Therefore, happy if the club can improve the squad and bring 2 or 3 in, just foreseeing that players will either leave or not be needed in the current group, it's not good for the squad to have players with no hope of playing.

Appreciate the time and effort you've put into this (y)

Don't forget we owed a whole heap of money to other clubs in transfer fees - our transfer debt was £77 million and IIRC a large amount of that was falling due last season. Let's say the £60m covered that leaving us £17 million for this season.

That means our wage bill last season had to be covered by the £42m parachute payment + Championship tv money.

Relegation clauses were rumoured to be 30-40% so let be generous and take the higher of them.

That takes us down to about £65m wage bill. Then start taking out the players that were sold/released (although only 60% of their wages) and you're still going to struggle to get it down to break even.

At the same time don't forget to add in the incomings - Pearson, Wilshere, Carter-Vickers and Riquelme.

Then there are the other costs of running the club. About £8 million a season in that last PL year. Partially offset by some commercial income but you're still looking down the barrel of another loss.

Now move onto this year and we have that £17m transfer debt to find. That's most of the Danjuma £21.5m gone although it does leave some in the kitty.

Then add in the fact the parachute payment drops by £7m to £35m.

Those two combine to leave us £3.5m short. We'll be lucky if the wages of King, Bego and Danjuma fill that hole. And that would only be to match last season's loss.

As I said, there might be money to spend. But it will depend on Max funding it. Despite all the sales, reductions and players released we'll still be losing money.

Plus, there's still the monster debt owed to Max.
We actually brought in 80m in sales last season not 60m.....so we don't have that 17m transfer debt to find this season.

I
Hardly sold every asset we still have brooks, solanke, billing, Stacey, possibly lerma, seems a calculated strategy to keep certain players.

I think we would have sold Lerma for a half decent price. That said, glad we haven't after seeing Saturday's second half.

Agreed I think we are 2 attacking players short . One is a striker for sure

What about Ollie Burke? Read that SU are looking to offload him and Brewster. He's strong and can play in different positions. Doesn't have a great recent strike record but SU haven't exactly created loads of chances.

Living in Sheffield I can report that Blades' fans would be offering to drive Brewster and Burke down to the South coast!

The Ramsdale and Wilson money wouldn't all be up front (Ake was IIRC, hence the price). So those payments will be spread.

Plus, in amongst all those transfer fees we haven't allowed for player and agent cuts.

Then on the plus side, there was some PL tv money that came late due to the later season finish. But that also meant PL wages for longer as well

There's so many moving parts we can't be confident of anything beyond what rhe accounts say. Which was we've been heavily losing money for several seasons even with the tv money. I can't see how we'll be in surplus for last or this year.

The good news is Max hasn't panicked and still seems to want to give it a go. Hence bringing in Parker et al. It doesn't mean there's cash sloshing about though.

We may well have had the Ake... Wilson and Rambo money up front though....as shown with the Ming's transfer it's fairly common practice to borrow against these staggered payments.

Very helpful chart, thanks.

Just a quick question. Why has Jefferson Lerma* aged 6 years in the last year? Or have I missed something?

Is a great city for students and a really good uni too. Very hilly so he'll stay fit too. Well located for weekend walks and city trips too. A fair way from home but nowhere is very far with the UK really.

Is Sheffield all right? It’s one of the places my lad is looking at for uni

I work at the Uni, so may be biased. It constantly gets high-ranks in student experience, and is broadly well-respected (some departments score better than others as elsewhere, so it depends on which subject he wanted to study). The city itself is pretty safe. PM me if you want to ask any specific questions.

Yeah. All depends on whether he'd rather go to a campus uni or one within the city. If he's happy being within the city, the University of Sheffield is a great choice.

Thanks Matt
He’s looking at civil engineering, we were lucky to get a campus tour last month and it certainly had a nice feel.

Interesting if true. Didn't think we'd sign both Rogers and Quina. Having seen neither play in the flesh, they're similar on paper at least, so would have thought it was one or the other given our more stretched resources.

Neither is really the centre forward we need...
Not similar at all. Rodgers an out and out winger. Quina not a winger at all.
