Joshua King

Yes - certainly better than playing Sarr up front as we did v Liverpool against someone like Van Dijk!

Everton just imploded (a few injuries and their squad was shown up again) and we took advantage with some good counter attacking using the pact of our front guys and some good skill.

Something we lacked in previous games.

King has some great attributes as a central striker, strength, ability to hold the ball up, pace and a great touch. He was a wasted talent in the relegation season under Howe but it looks as though Ranieri recognises his strengths and will play to them. I think and hope he’s in for a good season.

Persisting with playing him on the wing to accommodate an out of form Wilson, along with not banishing Fraser from the squad at the start of the season was the difference between the point that would have saved us..

or that numpty forgetting to turn on the goal line thingy in that villa game would be a far more definitive reason....

Should have cashed in on CW and RF summer of 2019..

Josh King has one good game and it’s back to desperately trying to prove he’s a better number 9 than Callum Wilson…16 goals and 5 assists in his last 30 games…in a Newcastle side.

The only one sounding desperate is you.

They're very different players, both very good in their own ways.

Neil's comment above is correct though: "Persisting with playing him on the wing to accommodate an out of form Wilson... was the difference between the point that would have saved us..

Spot on

They can be yes unfortunately for Joshua it hasn’t proved very often recently.

And yes they are indeed very different players. One is a natural number 9 the other isn’t and can add more to a team playing different roles.

Not
Oh my god, can you imagine the level of meltdown on here if we'd done that? There'd have been accusations of the owner clawing his money back, people would have said we lacked ambition, it would have been carnage......

Not if we had invested the funds elsewhere. They both wanted to go so their hearts weren't in the job here.

Yes. We are all that dim we are judging everything we know about Josh King on one game he played for Watford.

None of us at all are taking into consideration the season he played for us as a central striker and scored more PL goals than Callum Wilson has in six seasons of trying…

If I throw in a royal we when I post will it make it sound like it’s more popular than it is?!

We notice that these posts weren’t being made at any point over last 12 months, they certainly weren’t being made when he was played as a number 9 against Leeds and was hauled off at half time for failing to pass the ball to anyone on his own team. No they come after he finally has a good game…

We also note that King’s season of more goals than Wilson managed was many many years ago, ironically wasn’t always deployed as a 9 and we also notice that his 16 goals and 2 assists came over 2,721 minutes of football whilst Wilson’s best 14 goals and 9 assists came over 2,535 minutes, but do carry on repeating the same old same old.

Obviously Howe was wrong all those years. Equally every manager has it wrong in the Premier League otherwise they would have all been falling over each other to sign him for virtually nothing when Wilson was £25million…

He was great on the wing for us. Arguably his best position, especially as he was more inconsistent than Wilson in the middle.

Callum Wilson scored 8 goals in 35 matches during our relegation season, that's inconsistent! Eddie persisting with him when it was obvious he was so off-form was probably the prime cause of our going down. When Josh King played down the middle during the 2016/17, in Wilsons absence, he scored 16 times, a feat Callum never managed for us.
I agree Josh did great work down the flank but, as far as I’m concerned he should have been taken Callum’s place in 2019/20.

As I’ve already posted in depth about Wilson’s form that season recently I’ll skip over it.

In regards to King that season. There were a couple of reasons why he didn’t play as a 9 to replace Wilson. Firstly he was needed in wide positions where we were lacking options, especially options with pace.

Secondly, he was injured a lot during 2020.

Depends what we would have done with the proceeds. If we'd bought Ollie Watkins, that would have been good business.

We rejected a 28m bid from Man U on transfer deadline day that he never recovered from. But that doesn’t fit with your narrative so best not mention it…

I don’t have a narrative. At the time I thought we should sell him to Manchester United, he deserved his move (feel free to use the search function, only takes a couple of seconds, certainly don’t have to trawl through messages to research it).

As you say, he never recovered, so not sure why he was the obvious replacement for an apparently out of form Wilson…whilst also injured for swathes of the remainder of that season and needed in positions that we were lacking.

Also find it rather ironic that Wilson is dubbed as inconsistent whilst in the same breath as advocating King…who “we’ve” always said can be a monster of a player, can be world class when he wants to be, most notably against former clubs when he has a point to prove… who was he playing at the weekend?
