Thoughts v Bristol City

Good to see an unchanged side. We haven't been able to do that often this season.

Conceded goal came from a stupid challenge from Anthony that gave away a free kick. I could see well in advance he wasn't going to get there but he couldn't resist. That went for a corner and from that they scored from the man Anthony was marking. Not his best 60 seconds.

We certainly showed intent to create. Lots and lots of crosses in the first half but nobody was able to get on the end of them. We looked much more dangerous in terms of getting attempts on goal when passing through them. You could see the change in approach in the second half so credit to Parker for pushing that.

Ref completely lost control of Bristol City's physicality. Utterly ridiculous wrestling going on throughout the whole match. I understand he may want to play an advantage but on some of those (numerous) offences he has to go back and book the player. Instead, he just encouraged them to do it even more. The ref's name is Steve Martin. He certainly looked like The Man With No Brain out there and I'd call him The Jerk based on that showing.

Solanke's goal was thanks to a head up to spot the run first time pass from Christie. Beautiful.

Fast thinking on the corner from L Cook for his goal. Wasn't from the prepared playbook as you could see him shouting for it because he was in acres of space. One from the you have to buy a ticket to win the lottery school of shooting and scoring.

Stupid goal to concede so late. Where was Zemura? Where was the cover if he was out of position? One to analyse more later.

Seemed a simple choice for Parker today with 'go out and do what you did last time' but that can easily get torn up when you let in an early goal. What we saw was a mature and professional performance in response. Very encouraging as given our run in we may well find ourselves behind in some games in the coming weeks.

Three points continues to keep the pressure on the chasing pack as their window of opportunity to catch up gets smaller

If I have to criticise anything, I'd say that on the balance of play and opportunities that should have been a 4-0. That we let it go to 3-2 is a minor quibble.

Positive performances:
L Cook - A couple of shaky moments but was the beating heart of that win.

Solanke - I've criticised him before for not dominating his defenders but today he was all over the pitch and was the class act on the pitch. Excellent.

Zemura - Amazing energy up and down (apart from the late goal?). Could have made better choices with his final ball a few times but overall well played.

Room for improvement:
Anthony - Not his best day. Felt like the weak link in our attacking play. Neat at times but offered no penetration and missed a great chance. He may regret that given Dembele's cameo.

Christie - His all round play was great but I've never seen such a talented player in all other aspects of his game with such poor finishing. He's like a mythical animal with the body of a lion but the tail of a pig. Genuinely shocking. So he's here for that alone as otherwise he was very good.

Thought the team played well, and thoroughly deserved the win.

At 3-1 we were pushing for a fourth.

Then conceded to make it 3-2 from a well executed Bristol attack.

Dembele is an exciting player, and also scored whilst on Ramadan..... so kudos for him.

Overall an excellent team performance.

Great game of football, no signs of “playing with the handbrake on”. Could’ve scored 4 or 5, they could’ve scored more potentially. Ref was wank. Standard championship fare :D

Fantastic game of football I thought and we took the intent from Huddersfield into this game. The patterns were great although a little too similar for my liking, not that that matters when they work which they largely did today.

Good points
Lewis Cook… finally seeing the player he is again and it’s majestic.
Pressing in second half was fantastic
Solanke bullied them as did Jeff.

Negatives
Set piece attacking and defending looks like we just don’t practice either.

Christie. Cost us games earlier in season with his ‘ 5 year old wearing flip flops’ shooting. Could have cost us again. He just simply can’t start in a forward position. If he has to play it should be withdrawn but ideally just play Cantwell. If Billing played like he did every week his detractors would be foaming at the mouth…

A must win today with the fixtures coming up and we did it in style.

Good result in the end Bristol stretched us. Special mentions Travers (again), Dembele for a special goal and Cook on the naughty step on Monday for taking a shot outside of the box.

Very enjoyable game and well deserved 3 points. We look like a different team to the one that struggled in those 3 home games a few weeks ago. Fantastic to see. Lewis Cook absolutely brilliant.

Completely disagree re Christie. His shooting may be woeful but his creativity in attacking positions is absolutely vital to the way that we play. He can unlock an opposition defence as he proved today and vs Huddersfield.

What would the alternative be? Jemal Lowe is a far better finisher but we also look a lot less balanced with him on the right. The opening goals of the last two games don’t happen if he is playing. Cantwell would not be at all suited to it either, he’s a player who wants to be infield. Having him wide right just wouldn’t work, he’s also not exactly prolific himself.

Out of interest had a glance at their match thread and they mostly seem convinced they should have been given a penalty. Genuinely laughable. It was a blatant dive and the only reason he wasn't booked was because the ref was being a prick all afternoon. If you're going to give pens for that then we should have had six or seven pens for their wrestling antics.

For a player with Christie's overall ability, his lack of being able to leather a ball is astonishing.

However, given his skills its a psychological part of his game, rather than a true inability to hit the ball.

Deer in headlights perhaps......

Don't get your Christie view at all. His shooting is better than Lewis, he has fantastic energy and vision and he always gives 100%

I always respect and often agree with your opinions Neil ,but sorry, with Christie you are wrong.
Baffling how his finishing is so poor, look at videos of him at Aberdeen and Celtic on YouTube and he scores some crackers.
Tougher league I know ,but he gets in the positions, which is the hard part, just baffled why he can't do the last bit.
He has to start though for the other parts of his game he brings to the team.

An alternative is Dembele who is clearly more dangerous around the box, but doesn't track his man back or help his full back, both things Christie excels at. Horses for courses, not too many complete players at this level. Possibly something to ponder in the summer if the next level beckons.

Christie's shooting is awful.

He has had 10 presentable chances of late and had 2 or 3 on target.

2 went in, but they were NOT where he wanted either.

Lewis Coom has been told to be more advanced and has scored in 2 games this season.

His first 2 goal haul since he kicked a ball.
