Steve Cook

Ian Cox was class, should definitely have got more games in the top flight - perhaps hindered by converting to a centre half and “making it” later in his career?

I loved Tommy, but he lacked a bit of pace and was limited in terms of his ability when in possession of the ball to make it as a premier league regular - the Villa move was good for all parties, shame it didn’t quite work out for him at the time.

Loved Coxie, him and a young Howe were immense. Poor old Franck Rolling left Leicester to join us for first team football. Barely got a look in.

Not sure Cox was good enough to be a pl cb though.

Thinking about it, quite a short cb pairing in the scheme of things, particularly at league 1 level. although apparently Cox was 6 foot. Both very good on the ball though for lower league cbs. Cox head a slightly awkward looking technique, but overall was decent and would sometimes travel with the ball, take risks. Must have been half decent in possession, having started his career as a more attack minded cm.

I don’t think anyone is saying that Cook didn’t have flaws. We’re not going to have many players at our club that are flawless. In our whole club history though I can only think of two centre backs that would start ahead of him in his prime. Ake and Teale. That’s quite an achievement worth celebrating and a model pro with the fans too.

Initial reaction was that can't be true, but upon reflection, I'm struggling to think of anyone who was undoubtedly better. Ake without question, probably the most talented player we've ever had. Rare to seem him turn out less than a 7 out of 10 performance, despite our defensive frailties. God knows how we kept someone that good for 3 seasons (think it was 3?).

Maybe Howe could have been, had he not been dogged by injury issues. He played for England u21's (almost unheard of for league 1 players iirc). We nknow how studious, committed/professional he is. And had more to his game than a limited lower league cb, so who knows how far he may have gone.

That will be the Tommy Elphick who Eddie correctly ascertained would get exposed in the PL and released early to save mercy and the Ian Cox who played 11 times in top flight?

Just checking…

I know we don’t want to think particularly how good Cook is before Tuesday but that’s some cracking rewriting of history. Waiting for the Warren Cummings is better than Charlie Daniels thread…

I don't think the Cumnings comparison is that far fetched tbh.felt he was good enough to be a very good champion level player, prior to injuries.

I don't think many expected Daniels to keep progressing all the way through to being a regular and effective top flight player for us. I can recall many highlighting lb as being a potential weak spot that needed to be addressed, but a mid/late 20s Daniels kept getting better and better.

Not totally unrealistic Cummings wouldn't have done similar if he played under Howe 10 years later and didn't break his leg. We've had some top left backs over the years, relative to league 1 level. Malone, Wiggins, Vincent, Masters etc.

Not relevant due to the score but apparently our Cookie boy got rinsed for the Swansea goal today.
Listen,I love the bloke ,he was a great player for us ,but it's getting embarrassing how many people still have a hard on for him, almost clinging to him as the last stick to beat the club with if Forest pip us to the post.
Pathetic.

It's similar with Surridge. We have seen for ourselves his limitations. Neither of them will feature much in the premier league with Forest if they win the play offs.

He did appear to be the closest Forest player to the Swansea goalscorer, in the photo on the BBC website.

I have had conversations with a professional who is still playing in the Championship to this day and an ex player who had nine seasons of Premier league football. Both have said to me in the past that Cookie was limited in his footballing ability and must have woken up and pinched himself every morning that he was a Premier league player.
I do think we look back at some of our ex players with the rose tints on and I wouldn't agree that Cookie was a better player than Cahill.

Cookie can/could be great, but consistency was an issue. Let's hope the best Steve Cook doesn't turn up. One thing we can't doubt is his commitment and energy. Love Cookie. Just hope he has a shocker on Tuesday.

As professional as he is I think he will be a bit of a mess of emotions by kick off time. It could be that he wants to win this game so much that he will be wound up too tight. It's going to be a very strange evening for him and his family.

Deserves a decent reception before kick off. I hope Surridge doesn't get booed. Doesn't deserve to be.

I'll be singing "dirty Northern ****************************" at Surridge as he's from Ferndown, which is north of everywhere I've lived.

He might get polite applause before kick off, but I'm still conflicted about genuine Boscombe Legend Steve Cook...
